Re: 2017 Cyclones Retirement
honestly i see:
harvey: harry
irma: imogen/ivy
maria: megan
the u.s. will likely keep the storm names old-fashioned unlike other territories who tend to go more trendy.

No explicit mentions on the WMO site, but it is all but certain the US will ask to retire the names Harvey, Irma and Maria. The next most likely would be Nate but that would be led by Costa Rica and Nicaragua if anyone.

That's an interesting theory. There's nothing "old-fashioned" about Megan, though. It was never used except as a nickname in Wales before the 20th century.

nooo mate megan definitely isn't old fashioned
i mean... harvey will be requested by the us so they would pick something oldish like harry since they always go for older names
irma could be either asked by the us, the European countries (uk/netherlands/france) or other Caribbean nations so something universal might be used. i think the origin of the new name will be slightly european-sounding even if it is an english name. irma is a very popular name in dutch-speaking territories btw so they might go dutch.
as for maria... puerto rico might deem maria as hispanic even though non-hispanics use that name widely. so... megan for the non-hispanic name or maybe marisol for the hispanic name replacement should maria be deemed hispanic.
to be honest... i also think there are themes for each hurricane naming lists but i don't want to go into too much detail here. list 3 seems to lean towards old-fashioned but embellished names.

Re: 2017 Cyclones Retirement
here are my honest opinions on how the replacement names might be chosen:
harvey, irma and maria will most likely be removed. nate has a 50/50 chance of being removed.
the atlantic naming lists, believe it or not, seem to have a theme going on per list. the people in charge may not realise it when choosing names but there definitely is a pattern. based on previous replacement names per list, i can detect the following themes per list:
list 1: old-fashioned, nicknamey and american-sounding. most sound middle-aged or older. very few names of a non-english origin are on that naming list (e.g. odette).
list 2: germanic-sounding, nicknamey and again, middle-aged sounding. the english-language names sound rather britishy rather than american though, unlike list 2. again, few latin-origin names are on that list (e.g. gaston).
list 3: quirky but old-fashioned. these names have authenticity and character despite being on the old-fashioned side. most sound like a bunch of american 1970s primary schoolchildren. a good mix of english, germanic and latin-based names, with two names even passing for asian origin (despite one being widely used in the english language).
list 4: a little dowdy and old-fashioned. have grandparent or middle-aged mumsy/daddy sounding names. some latin-based names (e.g. ernesto) seem to liven the list up a little bit.
list 5: euro-chic, fashion-forward and trendy. mostly consisting of bold, continental european-origin names. the english names sound more british/irish than american (despite some, e.g. barry, karen, being a little bit on the middle-aged side). many french/italian/hispanic names occupy this naming list, more so than any other naming list. most names have an average name-bearer age of a millennial (us data). most "edgy" or "bizarre" name replacements are usually saved for this naming list.
list 6: old-fashioned.
also, america will most likely head harvey's retirement case. they will do the same with maria on behalf of puerto rico. for irma, i believe the bct, netherlands or france will head this case but i will not be surprised to see the us head it. costa rica will likely head nate's case should he be up for retirement.
the us is known for using middle-aged-sounding/old-fashioned names to replace retired names. other countries seem to go a little bit more fashion-forward. especially when they keep pushing for ivy/ina to replace an "i" female storm name since 2003.
they might have to keep the percieved "ethnicity" of the name, but they might bend the rules this year. usually, english, french, spanish and even dutch-language names are allowed, but there have been cases of eastern-european (e.g. ivan, igor) and scandinavian (e.g. ingrid) names in use. however the names mentioned have all been retired and replaced with english-language names (ian and imelda). harvey is english, irma is germanic (in this case, dutch) and maria can be percieved as any ethnicity mentioned but french. it is likely that harvey will be replaced with another old-fashioned, english-language name, irma could either be replaced with a contentinal or another old-fashioned english name (depending on which country heads irma's retirement) and maria can be absolutely anything. they might keep to the theme of the list however. i do believe, however, that irma's replacement name will be continental-sounding as they are running out of replacement names for "i" names.
based on the following information i have given above, i predict these will be the names to replace the retired names:
harvey: horatio, harry, hank, harold
irma: ivy, imogen, isa, ilse, isla, inge, ivonne, imke
maria: marissa, megan, molly, minerva, minnie, millie, marisol, margaret, maggie, marge
bolded names are the most likely replacement names.
names such as mckenzie, makayla and mckenna will probably be saved for list 5.

The meeting is this week. On Thursday or Friday we should officially send Harvey, Irma and Maria into the dustbin of history (and clear up the question mark on Nate).

I think it’s atleast a 70% chance Nate gets canned. It was 2x as deadly and 2x as destructive as Otto

Re: 2017 Cyclones Retirement
IF Nate is also retired, this list will be the first one in which more than half the original names were retired. There are 13 originals left, and 2 of them are certain to get retired. That's remarkable considering there were no retirements on this list until 1999!
It will also get the first third-generation name with Irma's replacement. Three of the other lists have three such names.
Arlene - still on list
Bret - still on list
Cindy - still on list
Dennis - retired after 2005
Emily - still on list
Floyd - retired after 1999
Gert - still on list
Harvey - retired after 2017
Irene - retired after 2011
Jose - still on list
Katrina - retired after 2005
Lenny - retired after 1999
Maria - retired after 2017
Nate - retired after 2017
Ophelia - still on list
Philippe - still on list
Rita - retired after 2005
Stan - retired after 2005
Tammy - still on list
Vince - still on list
Wilma - retired after 2005
For comparison, the 2018 list has only four names retired: Gilbert, Joan, Keith and Sandy.

Re: 2017 Cyclones Retirement
I think we’ll find out today. I’d imagine they retire and replace the names during the review of the last season, which is the 3rd item and 1st big one on the WMO agenda

What's your reaction if the WMO chooses not to retire Irma or Harvey?

Not really going to think about that, since the big 3 are practically guaranteed to be retired.
