This 360 video I found on youtube captures the experience best IMO, very similar to how we experienced it. Click and drag to move camera around. I think the level of darkness really depended on how close one was to the center line. The trees and other objects on the horizon helped to block the surrounding light.

Wow, it seems like it was just a few months ago I was in Lexington, SC for that awesome spectacle. A year gone by already! How time flies indeed!! The 2024 total eclipse will be upon us before you know it.
