Re: CPAC: LANE - Hurricane
Lane's eye is torching on satellite imagery. No surprise that Recon found a stronger storm.

Recon aside this is T6.5. If W was thicker on the west, this would be a T7.0.

My posts are my own personal opinion, defer to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and other NOAA products for decision making during hurricane season.

I'd go with a TC Update with a 145 kt intensity there.

Johnston makes the most sense. Christmas Island is in the AUS.
there is a Christmas Island south of Hawaii, in the Line Islands
Interesting...supposedly the airstrip at Johnston has been unmaintained for 15 years, and I don't know what facilities they would have there now to support even an emergency landing.
Can Bonriki (Christmas/Kiribati) service military aircraft? Because it's either that or...Midway, I guess? Better yet, C-130's have been able to safely land on a carrier....
Enjoy your posts AJC3 they always make sense without all the semantics.

Central pressure down to 929mb now as suggested by latest center dropsonde. Central pressure has fallen at a rate of ~3.5mb/hour over the past few hours.

This is truly a nightmare scenario. The aftermath would be worse than the storm itself - they are 2,000+ miles from any kind of help.

Just got back from a frustrating supply run. Sam's Club is out of water and D batteries and Wal-Mart is out of flashlights. Luckily I have a couple cases of water already and a few flashlights Still need to hit the hardware store for plywood. Hopefully they're not out. Glad to see people are taking this threat seriously.

I think the best case scenario by now is for Lane to be rip apart by the Big Island. At least they can evacuate residents in the landfall area to the leeward side.

Link to the hurricane preparation forum; I haven't read everything on it and it probably has a mainland bias but there could be some useful info:

I did a Google search real quick. There's something called GP Roadway solutions that seems to sell sandbags. Their Maui branch is located on 23 La'a street in Kahului.
Said to call first though if you want them pre-filled.
Phone number for that branch: (808) 873-7461
Don't know if that is close to you or not though.

18Z HWRF shows less weakening while passing the Big Island to the west and have a CAT1 making landfall on Maui
