WOW, I’ve been out for just a day and it’s a borderline Cat 5?!? Praying for everyone in Northern Florida!

It's pretty rare, I can only think of 3 majors in my 14 years here, Charley in 04, Dean in 07 and Harvey last year (I suppose Irma counts as well) that have done what this system did.
Fess up, did anyone think this would be 155mph cane just 4 days ago?!

I notice the map says Michael is a 5. Is that because it doesn't differentiate between 155 and 156? So it just bumps up anything at 155 to a Cat 5?

It's an old routine that was never updated with the new equation.

Probably a category 1 impact there. Similar to Kate in 1985 and a bit worse than Hermine.

Whether it was a 4 or 5 at landfall is academic and we will go through data in the offseason. But it's splitting hairs...either way, it will be horrific.

Remember when we had a 13 year gap between category four US landfalls? Good times

Not a meteorologist, in fact more of an idiot than anything. You should probably check with the NHC or a local NWS office for official information.
