Major crash at wrel.com

#1 Postby Scott_inVA » Sun Oct 19, 2003 9:12 am

WREL.com experienced a fatal hard drive crash around 5:15PM on Saturday. A new drive was installed this morning and we're on a back-up from 10/14/03. I've redone the Model Map page and am working on updating the hurricane and weather products.

Everything should now load but please check times of graphics until we can proof everything. Never had this happen before... not fun :(

Thanks
Scott

Sorry to hear about that, Scott. Hard Drive Crashes are NO FUN. I hope the transition period goes smoothly.

alcohol, tranquilizers, nitroglycerin to restart the heart all would have been welcomed. Oh, and maybe a Yankees win over the Marlins, too

I think we've got most of it current. Thanks.

If you had stuff which wasn't backed-up on that old drive which crashed and you think it's lost forever, cheer up. It's not. And I'm not talking about any expensive thousands of dollars restoration service either. It's my understanding that there's now a website that you can go to and download a file (for a nominal fee via a computer with a good hard drive) which can can be used to completely recover all of the information from the crashed drive. I have a friend who thought the world had come to an end because a whole lot of very important info related to her business was stored on a drive that crashed. Well, the computer repair company used the file I mentioned to recover all of her stuff. 8-)

Scott, I am sorry to hear about your computer crash at WREL. "The blue screen of death" is one way we know our computer's have crashed. What happened to your system?

How do you intentionally crash your computer? I wouldn't think boredom would lead to wanting to
"basically harm" your computer.

Not sure, CF. We moved to a new machine in August so this was a surprise. The HD apparently started writing to bad sectors which increased with site traffic. HD was quickly chewed up before it could be shut down. HD was replaced and a 10/14/03 back-up was restored. Fortunately, the host performs full back-ups weekly and we do incrementals here. Moral of the sotry....backupbackbackup.

Our box is in Ft. Worth so Texans are okay by me

Scott

ps...I'm tracking the SW Carib blob...might get interesting.

Scott, you witnessed a crash, so you know how it did so.

The southwestern Caribbean isn't too far away from land areas, thus it sure could become interesting.
