I hear your sentiment, but at the same time a storm with 80mph winds, threatening 2 ft of rain across wide swaths of LA, storm surge, tornados and the shear size of this thing (majority of it still out in the gulf) would justify media labeling it a “mega storm”. Now if they called it “major hurricane” THAT would technically be disinformation, but I don’t think it’s hype to call it a mega storm at this point, let’s be real.

Is there a buoy under that 'Spawn of Barry' convection to the SW of the core?

A very rare event indeed.

2 thoughts:

1) It sure looks like it’s still moving in an overall WNW pattern with cyclonic loopbacks (the eye appears to be moving SW)

2) I’m not sure that it can’t continue to intensify for a while longer - the land South of I-10 is a huge lake and marsh area, akin to the Everglades.

Convection blowing up again due south of White Lake / Crowley. (Yes I know Crowley is inland it’s the only other reference point I have since there’s nothing else down there  )

I don't blame people for "-removed-" within reason. This is a weather board full of weather fanatics. We're a rare breed so what would you expect. How much traction would "high pressure 2k" get? We are fascinated by nature, awed by it but at the same time far more tuned into its danger than the public at large. In aggregate...we know what we're doing. I personally cheer on low end storms (my enthusiasm is capped at a low threshold owing to a stronger desire to keep the power on and the trees upright)...but yeah give me some sideways rain. How else do you break the heat at this latitude? It's also why I love central Florida's thunderstorm climo. Give me purple skies! As for Barry this is exactly the type of storm I would enjoy but I live in an area that doesn't flood and am aware of the flood threat for those in the path so concern for those folks is warranted. Hopefully most people get to enjoy a "fun" storm and much deserved break from the heat. Locally, Barry has broken our heat, taken our sea temps back to a sane level and is delivering a glassy ground swell to our beaches which I intend to take full advantage of later today. :D

It is completely calm at my house right now as of 1110am. It has gotten bright as well but the mist is basically falling straight down. We have to be in some sort of eye feature right?

Good call by the NHC by going with the true COC of Barry which still to the south of Lafayette over Vermillion Bay, the vort-max is rotating around the main COC about to get over water.

Same here in Youngsville! The wind was worst all day yesterday! This has been one really slow moving storm. At 10am wasn’t the storm 40 miles south of Lafayette moving at 6mph? That would mean we wouldn’t see the eye until 4pm?

There's a dark spot on the visible satellite right over us... so I guess so.

That's what the Euro has been showing, for the COC not to reach the Lafayette area until later this afternoon. It speeds up and then comes to almost a complete stop, it what has been doing for the last couple of days.

That rain band kind of parked itself on our house for a while, winds have picked up a bit, but nothing too bad yet. Holding out hope that I can at least keep power until my interview is over lol.

Upgraded to a cat 1 after reanalysis. I went to work that afternoon when she was expecting to make landfall as a weak TS. Long story short, we were caught with our pants down

We've been getting dumped on by endless rain here in Biloxi. Caught in one of those training bands, I think. Not much of any winds. A step above breezy.

If you are talking about current conditions in your area, can you kindly tell us where you are so we don’t have to click on your profile and try to find where you are ?
Thanks

Perhaps one of the strangest storms we've ever seen. Glad to be a part of it with this community - remember, to those in Louisiana, it may seem calm now but all the bad stuff is still over water!
