This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

"Economics Teacher: In 1930, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, in an effort to alleviate the effects of the… Anyone? Anyone?… the Great Depression, passed the… Anyone? Anyone? The tariff bill? The Hawley-Smoot Tariff Act? Which, anyone? Raised or lowered?… raised tariffs, in an effort to collect more revenue for the federal government. Did it work? Anyone? Anyone know the effects? It did not work, and the United States sank deeper into the Great Depression. Today we have a similar debate over this. Anyone know what this is? Class? Anyone? Anyone? Anyone seen this before? The Laffer Curve. Anyone know what this says? It says that at this point on the revenue curve, you will get exactly the same amount of revenue as at this point. This is very controversial. Does anyone know what Vice President Bush called this in 1980? Anyone? Something-d-o-o economics. “Voodoo” economics."

Honestly though... I feel like this is the type of determination, imagination, excellence and altruistic nature our culture had then.

This was fascinating and somewhat amusing at the same time. To be honest, it may not really be a great idea for people to have THAT much control over the weather. :)

The video actually in my opinion answers why the "Project Stormfury" governmental theory/experiment was scrapped.
Although at least four experiments were carried out.... the results could not be confirmed. It did perhaps confirm the phenomenon of eyewall replacement cycles.
But it brought up fears of increasing flooding events. Would the same tropical cyclone PRIOR to cloud seeding produce the same amount of rainfall? Or did the "seeding" perhaps intensify rainfall rates and thereby increase the flooding?
In Hurricanes Debbie and Grace, cloud seeding resulted in increased eye sizes and initially diminished winds, given more time over water, the storm regained its wind speeds plus 15% during Debbie.

Unintended consequences...
Who knows?
Could Stormfury work today? I think no.

This was long before storm furry. But yeah it would take a lot more effort to keep a storm down let alone turn it. One day it might be doable.

I read in the other forum that Typhoon Lekima was forecast to overwash Tarama Jima and that they might need the Red Cross money for the relief effort.

This is probably one of the reasons why I end up writing stories with sentient hurricanes in them instead of just making some of the characters humans with the ability to control storms like other people do.
The idea of that kind of power being in the hands of a single person, especially when one considers the damage humans have done with what of nature they can control...it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Of course, assuming the human race doesn't go extinct before then, sooner or later we'll probably reach the point where all weather is artificially made on schedule or something.

Exactly. Even if they mean well, it's kind of hard to imagine that humans might not inadvertently screw things up if they were able to control the weather like that. I always cringe a bit when someone comes up with some concoction or whatever that's supposed to dissipate hurricanes or something like that (although it's been a long time since I last heard of such a thing). No telling what consequences might result if they were ever able to succeed.

There also might be the possibility of such power falling into the wrong hands, although that sounds more like something Hollywood might dream up.
