We have some folks here on Barbados, hope they stay safe and report out when they can.

Yes, OHC and (at least in the near term) shear will not be issues for Dorian. I strongly suspect it would be a hurricane, possibly a major one, by now if the surrounding air was not quite so dry.

That begs the question, why IS the air in the western Atlantic/eastern Caribbean so dry right now? I would have to think the storm would have outpaced the SAL outbreaks that have occurred.

We get some brilliant ones in Barbados but this one the yellow light was scattered really intensely and it was almost like wearing yellow shades. Yellow light practically fully replaced all the white light everywhere. That was an experience.

mark sudduth has a pic of the yellow orange sunset with a rainbow. that was a very strange color for sure. https://twitter.com/robbielynm/status/1 ... 05985?s=21

I know just about enough to sound like I know what I'm talking about sometimes. But for your safety please follow the nhc for truly professional forecasting. :D

Large scale subsidence.

We looked at coral boulders atop 20 foot cliffs on the eastern tip of the island and tried to figure out if hurricane waves could move them. Determined it would take a decent hurricane to generate sufficient surge and wave activity to reach the tops of those cliffs and move boulders. Definitely going to be watching beach webcams anyway while there's any light tonight and tomorrow morning.

Surface pressure in Barbados has dropped from 1015 mb down to 1010 mb in just a few hours and the center is still 2 hours away. Dorian definitely has a well defined pressure gradient and there are 30 mph wind gusts in Barbados already. Peak winds will be out of the east as the center passes very close to the south facing beaches.

What does "large scale subsidence" mean in this context?

Recon missed the center, presumably because it's over Barbados now.

Was using an outdated sat image, my bad.

Yea, looks like they pegged the center then. MSLP of 1005mb @ 23 knots.

Need to sample the whole storm, but obviously based on that pass Dorian isn't even close to being a hurricane.
