OAKLAND, Calif. (Court TV) — Oakland Raiders linebacker Bill Romanowski is no stranger to controversy.
During his 16-year career, he has been called a racist for spitting on 49ers receiver J.J. Stokes during a game in 1997. He has been accused of being a headhunter for a vicious helmet-to-helmet hit on quarterback Kerry Collins. Romanowski was fined $42,500 in 1999 alone, and several years ago, he was accused of illegally obtaining prescription diet drugs, charges on which he was later acquitted.
Now, he is being sued by his own teammate.
Tight end Marcus Williams, 25, is seeking unspecified damages for injuries he sustained when Romanowski ripped off his helmet and punched him in the face, breaking a bone around his left eye. The incident occured Aug. 24 during a training camp practice drill, and ended Williams' season before it began.
"Marcus Williams wants to continue as an Oakland Raider but this assault has put his future in doubt," said Williams' attorney James J. Brosnahan.
The suit accuses Romanowski of battery, negligence and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
No criminal charges were filed in connection with the incident.
The suit, filed in Alameda County court, includes two graphic photos showing close-ups of Williams' swollen and bleeding eye socket and asks that Romanowski pay for Williams' medical expenses.
Romanowski has not commented on the suit.
