I know there's been a handful of further east major hurricanes, but what's the furthest east category 4 on record? This has to be close right?

This ranks 2nd I believe in the satellite era to 2010's Julia (at around 32W).

I'd estimate the intensity at 125 kt right now looking through the data and my analysis. Solid T6.0, almost T6.5.

Is it still possible for Lorenzo to become a low end cat 5 or is this as strong as it's gonna get? Either way, very impressive. Would it be the first cat 5 in the area if it does make it?

If the white ring can wrap around, they would probably analyze it as T7.0 given the small areas of CMG, but it would take a lot for them to upgrade to cat 5 without Recon. It would be a definite first for that part of the world in the satellite era. (Anything before 1970 or so would have been underestimated or missed entirely)

I believe Isabel was the last storm to be upgraded to cat 5 without Recon in the Atlantic, and at least in the modern era probably the only one.

That seems most likely, if not 145 mph.

This post was probably an opinion of mine, and in no way is official. Please refer to http://www.hurricanes.gov for official tropical analysis and advisories.

My website, with lots of tropical wx graphics, including satellite and recon: http://cyclonicwx.com

At this point, CMG is moot point when it comes to Dvorak unless it can wrap .5 degrees which is unlikely,

FWIW this is probably on the cusp of T6.5.

given the appearance of other atlantic cat 5 bombs like maria and dorian I'd really love to know the discrepancy between dvorak and recon presentations when this thing hits steady state because wow that's a nice sustained W band.
