Remembering Deputy Bruce Williams

Oct 21, 2003 10:24 am

The Green Lake County Sheriff's Department Is Grieving The Loss Of Their Deputy...And So Is The Community Of Berlin, Where He Grew Up.

The Shooting Death Of 38 Year Old Bruce Williams Clearly Rocked The Communities Of Berlin And Green Lake. Some Say They Can't Believe The Man They Played Softball With On This Very Field Is Now Gone. And They Say If Life Was A Game...They've Lost One Of Their Most Valuable Players.

“He's The Guy You'll Never Forget.

Dave Kramer Lost Much More Than A Softball Teammate When Bruce Williams Was Shot To Death. “ I Just Couldn't Believe It Happened.” His Former Classmate, Neighbor And Close Friend Is Now Gone. “ He Was Always Looking At Everybody Else Before Himself, His Family And Wife Came First, And The Neighborhood, He Was There For Them.”

An Athlete By Nature...Bruce Played A Number Of Sports At Berlin High School And Continued With Softball Leagues Later On.

“That Was Bruce, He Always Lived Life To The Fullest.”

Though He Was Known For His Jokes...Friends Say Bruce Had A Serious Side...Caring For A Wife And Three Young Daughters. “He Was The Father Every Kid Wishes They Had.”

“Bruce Was Such A Role Model, Such A Strong Person For The Community.”

That's What Led Him To Take His Job As A Deputy...Where He Made The Ultimate Sacrifice...

“Why Bruce…I'll Be Asking That Question For Years.”

Years Dave And Other Friends Will Spend Without The Man They Call A Great Sport Both On And Off The Ball Field.
“When We Take The Field Playing Softball, It'll Be Hard Not To Look At Center Field And See Bruce.”
“He's Not Going To Go Away, He'll Be Around.”

Those Friends Say It's Thier Turn To Step Up And Help Bruce's Family Out, Because That's How Bruce Would Have Wanted It.

This Is The First Time In 30 Years That A Green Lake County Officer Was Killed In The Line Of Duty.

Brother Will Lead Procession

October 23, 2003
BERLIN, Wis. (AP) - The brother of a Green Lake County Sheriff's deputy who was killed after responding to a domestic disturbance call will lead his funeral procession Friday.

Bruce Williams, 38, was shot Sunday afternoon by Aric Tonn, 21,
after Williams and Deputy Chad Holdorf responded to a 911 call from a Green Lake apartment building.

Tonn then committed suicide sometime during a standoff that lasted nearly 12 hours.

Jefferson County Sheriff's Officer Michael Williams will ride in
his squad car to lead the procession from St. Stanislaus Catholic Church after the 10:30 a.m. service to the parish cemetery.

One thousand officers from Wisconsin and neighboring states are
expected to participate. There could be as many as 500 squad cars in Berlin, Deputy Bob Lyon said.

Response from law enforcement officers in the wake of Williams' death was immediate and overwhelming, Sheriff Michael Handel said.

"We had an outpouring of help from as far away as Adams County. Every police department in (Green Lake) county was there," Handel said.

Officers from outside Green Lake County have provided a wide variety of help from manning the dispatch center and taking over patrols to serving as bailiffs in court, Handel said.

Meanwhile, some residents of the Green Lake apartment building were allowed to return home Wednesday. The building's owner, Michelle Foote, said some residents would not be able to move back for another two weeks.

Eleven families were displaced. Foote said bullets from Tonn struck two of the building's main water pipes, sending gushing water throughout for nearly 12 hours.
