SW carribean to become focal point

#1 Postby Vortex » Fri Oct 24, 2003 10:20 am

this weekend. Most guidance now points to some development(at least TD) to form just E of Nicaragua or just NE of Honduras. IMO we should see this system begin to organize by Saturday and likely a depression by late Sunday. Movement should be slowly NNW. In the longer range its very uncertain as a strong front is poised to pass thru S. Fl early next week. Either way there is a good shot at devlopment and a 55kt storm seems reasonable at this time. !2z guidance coming in continues to support development over the next 2 days. More later....

What guidance are you referring to vort? Seems like convection is re-firing down there this morning in the SW carib, and Invest near Hispaniola is weakening already. BTW, why is Hispaniola like a storm magnet :?:

I believe Hispanola is a "storm magnet" because it has a lot of mountains. Forgive me if I'm wrong.. But I believe that is why

Yes Josephine there are peaks of over 10,000 feet in Hispanola which are the kiilers for systems going that way and in many cases it has happened.

I don't think tropical systems move toward Hispaniola "simply" because of it's mountains. If so, what is causing them (the mountains), to pull these systems toward the island?
