Low 50s and steady light rain in Houston. Perfect biking weather - NOT! If we're not going to have a real winter then it's time for 70s and 80s to return.

Re: Texas Winter 2019-2020
I made a post in the fall about similarities in the 1967-'68 winter. Well, this is what Feb of '68 looked like. The fridge opened up. Mainly to the east, but lets see what happens.

Re: Texas Winter 2019-2020
From Firsthand Weather:
Over the next few weeks, the sub-tropical jet should remain quite active, and there are signs that ridging will build into the western U.S. as we move into February. Plus, broad troughing could set up over the eastern U.S., and the Southeast ridge shouldn't take as much of a stronghold.
At times, the upcoming pattern has looked somewhat similar to what occurs during a canonical El Niño pattern during the winter. This pattern may not be incredibly cold, but temperatures will push around average, or even below average, at times across the Southeast quadrant of the U.S. The likely scenario is that a parade of storm systems will pass through the area, some of which could take a southern, Miller A type storm track. Most of the time, these storm systems will bring a mostly cold rain; however, it will be February. So, I wouldn't be surprised at all if we have enough cold air to work with at some point to pull off a winter storm. Climatologically, that's when parts of the Southern Plains and Southeast typically get wintry weather anyway, even if that hasn't been the case in recent years.
We'll have to see if the western U.S. ridge eventually builds into Alaska, which would tap into the really cold air. If that ridge builds a bit stronger, the active storm track that has plagued the Pacific Northwest would likely divert northward into British Columbia. However, don't expect that to happen until next month.
For the winter weather lovers in the Southern Plains and Southeast, don't lose hope, especially if you're approximately at a latitude that runs around the halfway point of the Gulf coast states or higher.
Keep in mind that this is an assessment of the pattern, so we're not talking about any storm specifically at this point. We will do that if we see anything in particular that we need to discuss. -Matthew

This is what I am thinking also. This year's patterns are very much like -ENSO/-EPO winters of recent years.

No thanks, I'm loving this weather! Cold and rainy days are great!
Unless you like outdoor activities. Give me 95-100 degrees all year over this mess.

You say that, but you probably sit on your as* inside an air conditioned office all day. Get your city boy self outside and do some real work and see how you like it.

Any shot we have will probably be brief and late. The PV seems to be locked in. Hoping some blocking occurs before it starts to warm up. Going to throw out a year here: 2008. Nothing until March and then two quick moving storms that didn’t have a whole lot of cold to work with.
And as far as being outdoors in summer, yeah. When I did distance running, in the summer it was always after sunset and even then it sucked the life out of me. 10 - 11 minute miles in summer, 8 - 9 in the winter. Never was a world beater.

Summer is brutal to run. I’m a morning exerciser and there are parts of summer when it’s too hot the second the Sun comes up over the horizon.
Winter is brutal to bike, I’ll have to concede, but that’s why you cross train and take up, say running (or walking) so you can enjoy the seasons.
Summer is often too hot for really long bike rides in my opinion anyway. Even with the wind in your face, sweat can pour down your face into your eyes and your clothing looks like you rolled around a salt mine.
Summer is great for swimming of course.
If the temp never got over 85 here I would love it.
I think fall is best for overall outdoor exercise in Texas. Same temps as spring but lowering humidity with passage of cool fronts.
Heatmiser might want to try a few different things to go along with the biking routine. Would be better health wise and probably make him less grumpy all the time.

No problem with that at all. Look forward to a heat index of 110. I used to work construction in Fort Worth in the summers of 77-80. That included doing some roofing. Except for those summers and my time at A&M, I never lived north of I-10, so I love the heat.
By the way, I do sit in an air-conditioned office all day. They have the thermostat set at 74 degrees so I wear a coat with a small space heater on my desk pointed at my chest and hands. I'd wear gloves but I can't type with them on.

This thread would be completely dead without a little levity here and there. I promise you that if I ever see a REAL threat of winter weather across Texas then I'll be all over it. I do love snow.
