I tend towards conservative because nearly everything I have, I worked for. And I don't like people taking it away. I hate to ask people for anything. If I screw up, I'll take the blame, and face the consequences.
I know a family of people who won't do anything if they can get someone to do it for them. They constantly look for handouts and people to help them do what they could do if they wanted to. They don't take responsibility for thieir actions, they don't finish what they start, they don't plan ahead, and they blame others for all their problems. They vote democratic, because the democrats are for "helping people."
These are real people I know. I'm not making this up.

How about, "What can I do for MYSELF (and only when personal means and efforts have been exhausted, ask for help...but family and friends first, THEN local, THEN State and if not these, then and ONLY then Federal intervention)?"
This illustrates for all the biggest difference between liberals and conservatives, IMHO...and I'm an unabashed conservative.
I for one ALWAYS ask myself that everyday - I don't take handouts, I rarely ask for help because I feel that I should be able to figure it out myself.
I don't want the government to do ANYTHING for me than protect me, my rights and be there if and when I cannot assist myself, thank you very much. This is something that I've supposedly been paying for ever since I've been working and I'm expecting that help when I need it.
Both sides are more interested in what they can do for themselves, aka line their pockets, give friends and loyalists inside jobs and point the finger at the otherside as being the ones that screwed everything up. That's High School bullcrap and yes, I will always ask "what have you done for me lately?" when it's time to go to the polls because I'll be damned if I'll allow someone to be paid WITH MY TAXPAYER MONEY and not represent me and his/her constituent's wishes.

I'm confused.
You say you're conservative, but you do listen to the other side (by that, do you mean liberals?). Because then you say that as far as libs are concerned, you can't stand them and this country does not need them.
If, in your first comment, you mean liberals, how can you say that you listen to them if you can't stand them? Maybe you "hear" them, but you don't "listen" to them. My mom taught me that "to hear" means to acknowledge a sound, such as a siren, a bird, or even someone talking. "To listen" means that you process what is said via verbal communication and then you use the information sent to you through the message to help you understand (even if you don't agree) what the speaker is trying to say.

Your reply makes no sense :-? Hopefully all conservatives don't "listen" like thatJohnny wrote:I think the heading should be Rebulicans vs. Democrats. I am a conservative but I do listen to the other side. As far as Liberal's are concerned........can't stand 'em and this country does not need them.

Politics and religion are two topics that cause a lot of heated debates. I try to stay out of the Democrat vs. Republican, conservative vs. liberal arguments. When I vote, I look at a particular candidate's views on all of the issues that I have an interest in. If a candidate seems to share my viewpoints on most of these issues, I will vote for that candidate. I could care less what their party affiliation is.

Heck, I didn't mean to step on any toes or confuse anyone.
Anyways, let me be more specific. It seems like most here think that a Democrat and a Liberal are the same thing. I guess this could somewhat be true since most Liberals classify themselves as a Democrat. I think otherwise.
A liberal wants the problems solved their way and for you to pay for it. They know what's best for everybody yet don't want anyone to tell them what to do. They see the general population as a tax resource to fuel their ideals. They operate on feelings and appearances. Liberals take pride on being what they are....liberals. It's a label they wear with foolish pride.
A liberal is someone like Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson who just will not let racism die. They say racism needs to end but yet they play the race card on every issue that comes across there desk. They want the black man to depend on the government to provide for there needs. With these two idiots spouting off there racist agenda then racism will never die.
When I here the word 'Liberal' I think about the Dixie Chicks spouting off there anti-war agenda. When I here the word 'Liberal' I think about those idiots who had the 10 commandments monument removed from the rotunda of Alabama's state judicial building.
When I hear the word 'Liberal' I think about the organization PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) tresspassing on private hunting property and throwing human hair around to scare the animals away so the hunters won't kill them.
My Liberal list is very long. The vast majority of democrats do not hold the same ideology as Liberals so therefore I do not put them in the same boat.
So I will say it again, I cannot stand Liberals and they do not offer any good for this country. All they do is bring this country down. And yes, Rainband, I have met a good handful of liberals. I might not agree with most democrats but there substance holds alittle water, unlike their liberal cousins. My opinion of course.

I am sure most people that follow politics to a degree understand that there are Consevative Liberals and Liberal Democrats.
It is a rather stern comment to make... that you can't stand liberals. You should love everyone the same, unless they are down right enemies. You dislike the liberal point of view.

Wrong, I can't stand Liberals. They are taking away my gun rights, taking away my freedom of speech, trying to take away the 10 commandments and are now going after the removal of 'one nation under GOD' in the Pledge of Allegiance. They also want me to pay a penny for the slavery of blacks way back when. I'm just hitting the surface here. Sorry buddy, I can't stand Liberals. They are effecting my freedoms and what this nation was founded on.

Hate to say it, but this is true. Great definition of a liberal.

Now see, I've managed to stay away for a good long while but This is pretty much at the heart of why I backed out of Off Topic so I'll jump back in.
I'm a liberal.
*rolls eyes and waits for the attacks/hatred*
Actully I'm one of the most conservative of my peers- I voted for Bush and I keep my tree hugging to a minimum (I do adore the spotted owl though...). My husband rolled on the floor laughing when I was pegged liberal on S2k. BUT... I DO usually wind up on the "liberal" side of issues on S2K. I'm pro-choice for others (I could never get an abortion myself, but I'll stand up for the right for others to make thier own decisions about it). I'm leaning towards anti-war (where oh where are those womd's?)
I take every chance I get to question authority and I see it as one of my goals in life to make people really *think* about thier beliefs- usually by questioning them and presenting counter-arguments. A lot of people see that as agressive and liberal because I challange them to delve at least as far into thier beliefs as I do into mine to chat/debate with me. I see it as a chance to better understand thier point of views and to possibly open thier eyes to points that they hadn't considered before. I don't want to change anyone. I just want to get a good exchange of ideas going. Unfortunelty instead of being greated by reasonable debate and further explinations I get a lot of "It's god's will." "That's just what I believe." "You're nothing but a liberal. (as though it were some kind of insult...)" "You'll always be alone in your views." on many message boards and in real life.
Bah. There are plenty of people who believe in what I believe in. Quite a few of ~them~ are just as closeminded as the people I usually wind up debating with. I dislike closemindedness and people who are unwilling to discuss or understand thier oponents views- even if they disagree.
I've spent the last 6 years of my life constantly debating every belief I hold with my husband- even stuff we agree on- one of us will play devils advocate and we'll have massive discussions of they why's and hows of belief. It's really great to really understand where you're coming from at the core of it all- it makes explaining and talking intellegiently about it with others so much easier.
I cannot STAND being in the same space debating as a closeminded individual. It makes my skin crawl and it always leaves me asking myself- what the heck did I do WRONG? All I did was give an opinion! I don't expect people to agree- but one liners and total dismissal is enough to make me roll my eyes.
Liberal... conservative, democrat... republican. Isn't it good enough that we're all inhabiting the same planet? Do we really all have to agree? Do we really have to stick ourselves in nice neat little labels? I think a lot of people would be shocked to find out how utterly, disparingly, conservative I am on some issues. I usually shy away from labeling myself as anything. I vote based on individuals... not parties. But sometimes it's easier to just say- Hey I'm a liberal so that the people who don't want to listen- who don't want to play my games know to skim the post and ignore or blast me.
It's a shame- but true. Why does it happen?
I think the poster knows why.
I think we all know why.
Because we let it.
