Loop of Bertha in 1996, which has always been a favorite of mine as the shear turned it into a cutaway so you can see the entire low-level structure as it passes Florida, including the thicker clouds where the eyewall would've been.

Wow, I genuinely thought the image was from '69 or something along those lines, not '96! Those images looked super old, not gonna lie. I also thought they were separate storms.... and was a Cat 5 or something like that.

Yes, they are both Edouard from 1996; I could recognise that storm anytime. Category 4 (125 knots/933mb at peak), but only its third peak was measured via recon, and this imagery is from its first peak, estimated from Dvorak, and likely underestimated; I would go with 130-135 knots on the 25th, 125 knots in the imagery above on the 26th, although it's possible it briefly squeezed in 140 knots (Category 5). Analogue storms, satellite presentation-wise, would be Luis from 1996 and Isabel from 2003, which achieved similar intensities and similar structures in similar parts of the world, along similar tracks.

All of your posts in this thread going back to last year have been modern hurricanes with filters attached to make them look old (ostensibly because you found them that way on Tumblr, but a reverse image search shows the filtered versions have only ever been posted on Discord and embedded here!), cropped to make their identities less obvious to those who don't recognise hurricanes on sight, and captioned as "unidentified storms" (even though the URLs/file names often have the years and dates), and this has been pointed out before with subtler candour than I appear to possess, so I'm not sure why you would still think they're from the 1960s!

Yeah, there's no way he peaked at just 115kt. Heck, there should have been a protracted "Will they or won't they operationally call it a Cat. 5?" debate on this one. Shame recon didn't fly on Thursday.

yeah, absolutely no way Doug peaked at 115 kts, totally concur. If I had to estimate his peak, I'd go with 135kt-140kt, so about 160 mph Cat 5. The eye was spectacular, and you could even see the crazy 'pinwheel' inside the eye on the visible, clear as day, which is typical of Cat 5 cyclones.

Easy 135-140 kt. ADT really sucked with Douglas and the NHC was extremely conservative for some reason. I’m shocked they didn’t even bump it up to 125 kt at a minimum with that +19 C eye and almost full W ring.

Super Typhoon Zeb, 1998. The JTWC pegged it at 872 mb based on Dvorak estimates, which would unofficially tie it with Hurricane Patricia and Super Typhoons Gay, Angela, Ivan, Joan and Keith as the second-most intense tropical cyclone worldwide; a recent unofficial reanalysis by Christopher Velden et al, using the most up-to-date version of ADT (as of 2017) and compensating for various known biases (viewing angle, latitude, eye size etc), indicates Zeb had lower T-numbers and lower windspeeds than Haiyan, Gilbert, Yuri, Nida, Linda, Allen, Vanessa and Wilma, however. It certainly had warmer cloud tops than Haiyan. Regardless of how powerful Zeb truly was, this was certainly a sub-900 monster, and was absolutely huge (1,300km+), almost as large as Tip; it was so large it spawned its own tropical storm (Alex) in its inflow, which it promptly absorbed! In my opinion, one of the most impressive visible and infrared satellite presentations of all time; it definitely looks like one of the most powerful tropical cyclones in history.
