That's got to be off, right? 167 mph?

Yeah, that is a bit hard to believe

Unless it’s tornado related.

I thought so too until I realized 167 would be a fairly strong tornado as well.

Needs some recalibration. This Looks very inflated but I wouldn't be surprised to see 126mph gusts, not sure about 167mph...

It's remote equipment so no telling what exactly happened, but his equipment is reliable, he's been doing this a long time.

Gusted to 100 on the tower, so I would believe 126 but not 167. Even the confirmed tornados tonite were not that fast. Saw couplets at 100 mph earlier in the confirmed tornado that went up 421 and into Leland.

What we are seeing is very high winds aloft that are, fortunately, not translating to the surface. As the storm moves closer to the radar, the beam height decreases, and the speeds indicated by radar are coming way down. The readings from HurricaneTrack.com's anemometer must be spurious.

this is the 2nd hurricane landfalling as strengthening storm stateside and it's August 3rd. strengthening storms do a better job of delivering their very worst to the surface. Fear the danger of extremely warm shelf waters. this is yet another case where a dearth of ohc doesn't matter if a storm is transiting rapidly...a thin layer of high octane fuel is dangerous..

Interesting readings for sure. I was thinking tornado but it still seems quite high... I'm looking forward to his explanation post-storm.

Just looked at the archive of that meter. Yes, looks like a failure of some sort, I would hope.

It was measuring gusts of 43, 46, then cut out to 0. After that there are bursts of impossibly high winds. I'm guessing it broke at some point.

Rugged eye taking shape at landfall as well. Everything happened in a hurry.

Plane heading to sample the eastern quadrant one last time. Looks like the center is already onshore.

Absolutely insane winds aloft on this thing. Adjusting the beam height and tilt on radar really tells the story. Legitimate cat 3 gusts only 500 to 1000 feet above the surface.

Once again, we find ourselves saying "it's a good thing this didn't have a few more hours before landfall!"
