I wonder if 2020 will continue to beat 2005’s earliest [insert number] named storm records as we enter the heart of the season. Assuming the Atlantic remains totally quiet until the positive CCKW arrives later this month, it’ll be a close race for the earliest 10th and 11th named storms. Jose and Katrina currently hold those records on August 22nd and 23rd. With extreme activity likely beginning between August 15th-20th, there’s a decent chance of Josephine forming before the 22nd. But Kyle by the 23rd? As of now, it seems difficult. Of course, this could completely change if Josephine forms before the lid comes off.

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

What caused the gulf to fall so far below normal?

Hanna’s large size upwelled 2/3 of the Gulf. It will be back above normal in short order. Winds are very light and the skies are mostly clear. I’d put the Gulf above normal again by next week.

Ha, oof. I suspected Hanna played a role, but I didnt think it affected so much of the central and eastern gulf. Figured something else must have contributed that I missed.

The Gulf is definitely regaining its warmth quickly as we speak! No worries there.

Now the Eastern Tropical Atlantic cooling likely has to do with the +NAO.

This graphic below paints a different picture for the Atlantic in terms of current SST anomalies.

Not an meteorologist! Just someone who is interested in weather. Please refer to the NHC and local weather officials to make decisions.

if it was not omminous enough already, the NMME paints even a more bigger omminous picture for ASO.
