Storms that didn’t get the name they were expected to

#1 Postby Tekken_Guy » Sun Aug 23, 2020 12:05 am

Literally hours before Laura was named, it was looking very likely it would be Marco. Are there any other examples similar, where a storm hit TS status ahead of a storm that was expected to do so first?

It looked very likely Potential Tropical Cyclone Ten would take the name Irma in 2017, as it had tropical storm force winds and a 90% chance of development within 48 hours. This ultimately did not occur, and we all know what happened.

I was hoping TD #14 would've developed sooner and grabbed Laura and TD #13 (current Laura) Marco and continue the infamous "M" name streak that's been going since 2016.

Yes, but at the same time Laura is a really cool name that hasn't been used for a hurricane before. At least Marco can continue its trend of tiny storms.

Marco cannot be retired until we get Marco in the Atlantic and polo in the EPAC active at the same time :cheesy:

In an alternative universe, TD 10 was given the name Josephine after that rain contaminated ASCAT pass, and Recon didn't go into TD 13 during the morning it was named, allowing TD 14 to steal the name Marco. As a result, now Laura would be barreling into the Gulf as Hurricane Nana

Also, Erin was initially forecasted to be named before Dorian, and many people were referring to pre-Erin as Dorian and how it would impact the East coast. However, Erin took too long to organize, and a vigorous Invest 99L in the MDR took the name Dorian first. The rest is history.

Nothing will beat how tiny TS Marco was in 2008.

Chances of that happening are likely less than 25% in my opinion.

Last year. TD 10 (pre-Jerry) had formed in the MDR and was forecasted to become Imelda, and then the system in the Gulf quickly spun up into Imelda before 10 had become a TS. We know what happened afterwards.
