We could still fall below 20 named storms, but would be unlikely at this point. All it takes is a lull in tropical cyclone formation. Plenty of active seasons have lulls. 2008 produced an impressive early season- with 2 majors and 1 category 2 prior to September 1, but then no storms formed between Sept 2 and Sept 25.
2004, 2005, 2010, and 2017 were all characterized by impressive feats of rapid and often unexpected intensification. This year has been the opposite so far in that regard- but it is still of course only late August.

I’m going with 7 as a maximum. Once the wave train really kicks into full gear, we could see an exceptionally active September, although I’m doubtful it’ll match or exceed the record amount of 8 named storms held by 2002 and 2010.

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

I am going with 5, with another major hurricane included among that total to potentially threaten the CONUS.

I decided to vote conservative and go with 6. At least two of these will be majors. I think one of them will be Nana presently on an African vacation but then coming to Florida to retire. (Look out Century Village, everything she touches she destroys

I voted six, with two majors and 3-4 of them being hurricanes.

Assuming Nana forms by month's end:
Hurricane Omar (cat 2) - MDR fish, September 4
Tropical Storm Paulette - Gulf quick-spinner, September 5
Major Hurricane Rene (cat 3) - MDR fish, September 10
Major Hurricane Sally (cat 5) - MDR to Gulf to East Coast long tracker, September 16
Hurricane Teddy (cat 2) - Subtropical Atlantic, September 26
Tropical Storm Vicky - Caribbean quick landfaller, September 30

The previous record was 8, I think? And the month is barely half over.
