Lots of small towns like Vinton, Vidor, DeQuincy, then Sulphur, Carlyss, Lake Charles, Hackberry, Cameron.

I pray they get out of some of those places. It will not be pretty

lots of hardheaded Coonasses down there, really do hope and pray for them. Lots of them are part of the CajunNavy, Southeastern Texas included are the men and women that often help others with water rescues.

Recon is in the storm showing consistent if not rapidly falling pressure. IR can be very deceiving

This might actually be the least disastrous place for a storm like this to hit between say Houston and Naples, other than the big bend area of Florida. There are people in this area, and they are gonna be devastated, but in terms of major population centers I think Lake Charles is the only one to crack 50,000 people, and its some ways inland, so there may be a bit of weakening before then. Lots of sparsely inhabited marshland - Cameron Parish, which is the parish directly south of Lake Charles, has a population of 6500 with a density of 3.5 people per square mile. 50 miles on either side of the expected landfall location would be much worse.

At least from a wind damage perspective. The marshes there south of Lake Charles arent going to do much to hold back the storm surge.

So basically this is going to landfall near high tide. That’s horrible news...

Some of the model output for the next two days hints that Laura will be one of those storms that causes a lot of mischief deep inland in the form of high winds and/or tornado outbreaks. Think Ike, Ivan, Frances...

Going to make the storm surge even more of a problem unfortunately. Hope everyone in those areas have safely evacuated.

Wasn't it elliptical/oval shaped before? Is it easier for it to intensify with a circular eye?

Not an meteorologist! Just someone who is interested in weather. Please refer to the NHC and local weather officials to make decisions.

Laura is in a league of her own with this rate of deepening and the size of the eye

I was just down in Apalachicola on Saturday and drove a portion of US 98. Surge damage is still evident 2 years later from Michael about 80 miles east of the landfall location. People need to take Laura very seriously and get away from the Gulf! The surge inundation will extend FAR away from the center!!

While Hurricane Laura will be devastating to the coastal areas of Louisiana and Texas, her effects will be felt far inland as she traverses the country. Heed your local emergency management’s warnings. This storm is no joke.

You ain’t kidding. The speed at which she’s developed is simply amazing.

Also looks pretty annular. If it was a buzzsaw shape before, there's definitely way more symmetry now.
