Looking at the radar the western edge of the eye is 3 miles east of Lake Charles and the center 15 miles east of Lake Charles if you draw a line 360 degrees due north. So if there is any remaining westerly component to the track in the next 9 hours, Lake Charles will get the direct hit it looks like.

With a pandemic still ongoing it surely is a very bad time evacuating from a Category 4 (possibly a Cat5) cyclone. The stress from taking shelter is one, but making sure not to catch the disease is another.

The signs that this could happen were obvious for several days, yet it’s still awe-inspiring. We saw this last year with Dorian and the year before with Michael, and I still can’t wrap my brain around the absolute power of nature.

I lived through Katrina. Many of you lived through Ivan, Michael, Harvey, Andrew, etc. These people in SW Louisiana have no idea what they are about to experience, and it’s heartbreaking. All of this on top of a pandemic.

God help them.

My posts are my own personal opinion, defer to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and other NOAA products for decision making during hurricane season.

Are you talking about cloud top temps? You mean -90C?

Think he's talking about the difference between the eye temp and cloud top temps, which calculates out to 89.91C.

It's now very close to my lowest pressure guess if 932 to 936 (from talking tropics) - and who knows? Laura could even go deeper

This could get very close to Michael’s minimum pressure before landfall.

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

It has had lightning in the eye wall non-stop today and it hasn’t stopped strengthening!

So I want to ask a serious question. Practically everyone on the board and many of the models showed this happening or something similar. Virtually every RI indicator was flashing green, and it was widely accepted that Laura had a golden runway to landfall. So why didn’t the NHC grab hold of this trend until literally this afternoon? They actually ended up doing a great job with the track, which I felt was by far the most difficult part of the forecast, but they seriously undersold the potential intensity (remember when it was barely going to make landfall as a minimal hurricane?) I’m really not trying to knock the NHC, but I would be curious as to why they were so very conservative on Laura.
