Re: MED: 01M/IANOS (UDINE) - Hurricane
It seems people go to great lengths not to admit that it is tropical. They forgot tropical cyclone Pablo in october 2019 (cold precursors) at 43N and over 21C sst.

Tropical storm Ianos:

You put that over any part of the Atlantic basin and thats going to be bona fide full blown warm cored top end tropcial storm, with a very real chance of being upgraded to hurricane status.
As the NHC said for Vince in 05:
"if it looks like a hurricane, it probably is, despite its environment and unusual location"

"Latest HRV Imagery shows the wrap around to the "Classic Medicane Structure" which of course is not the same as a typical tropical cyclone as that would first develop a dense CDO feature and then a microwave eye and then on conventional imagery,"..
The reply, of course, is incorrect. Tropical cyclones in the MDR are often of the "banded" type, rather than "CDO" type.

We're all relying on you to find a weather radar site in western Greece!

In the last hours wind gusts were already around 80 km/h in Kefalhnia: https://www.infoclimat.fr/observations-meteo/temps-reel/kefalhnia-airport/16685.html

Re: MED: 01M/IANOS (UDINE) - Hurricane
In lieu of currently unavailable radar data from Greece, I believe we should be getting a good pass of the GMI instrument (microwave) onboard the GPM satellite at around 2230 UTC, with data becoming available afterwards. Perhaps we'll get a good sense of internal structure. Around that time Ianos should still be offshore Kelafonia and Zakynthos. Very curious to see how the surface observations from the area look since this should be one of the stronger Medicanes that we've seen.
Satellite image from NOAA-20 earlier today. Yep, that's a tropical cyclone.

The qualifier Medicane is dumb and demeaning of the impacts these storms can have. The accurate term for Ianos is hurricane.

Agreed. They're probably even less used to them/prepared also, so an equally strong storm might be worse for them.
