An Update on My Mom

#1 Postby DaylilyDawn » Sat Nov 01, 2003 11:17 pm

I went to see my mom today after being sick for the last week with a cold. She is not doing too good, she said that she had been sick also and that someone had stepped on her glasses and broke them. The staff have been talking when they think she is asleep and she isn't so she hears them talking about her. I wish I could move her to a different nursing home but finances will not allow it.

DaylillyDawn-I'll say prayers for your mom. My dad had to go to a nursing home too, before he passed away from cancer. 2 weeks in the hospital and then 3 in the nursing home. A nursing home is very different from the hospital, how well I know that. I'm sure she's getting the best care possible, perhaps the nurses handle patients all the time in situations like your mom's and they just assume they can't hear. But you and I both know they probably can. Have you pulled them aside and asked them to discuss the situation out in the hall? I would at least try that.

I didn't sleep well when my dad was terminally ill. I wondered if he was getting the care he needed. Looking back I think he did but again, the attitude between hospital vs nursing home, was slightly different. Not to worry more, but I didn't always have a nurse come in and ask how my dad was doing during visits. That happened in the hospital. I think they all knew it was terminal and so treated him as such. I remember crying driving to and from my visits with him. I'd get home and my husband would ask how my dad was doing, and then it would all come out again.

I wish you could move her to another facility but I'm sure she's getting good care. Try talking to the staff if you can. That may help. Make eye contact with them, I didn't. I just would walk in my dad's room or find him (he would sit with other patients in the common room) and visit him there.

Hugs going out to you. It's a time in your life that is unlike any other. I'll say a few prayers too.

Thank You Mary, for the prayers, they are greatly appreciated.I didn't know she had been sick due to the fact that she can't phone out because there is not a phone in her room. I had been so sick with this cold that I didn't even feel like cooking at all, my hubby did most of the cooking this last week. My uncle was there before me yesterday and wore her out with his jokes and laughter. He took her and my grandmother outside on the porch but it got too windy so he brought them back inside.
He is only a few years older than I am but he is my mom's baby brother and he is funny at times. I am glad that my grandfather isn't here to see how this place is treating his daughter and his wife. It just breaks my heart.

There are definately good nursing homes out there and ones that leave alot to be desired. If someone can't get over to see her, then perhaps a call should be put into the nursing home to check on her. this will at least put the nursing home on notice that she is being checked on daily.

I hope that you are feeling better Daylily. It sounds like you had that flu that came around my area about a month ago. Plus, you're so run down from worrying about your mother that your system is bound to catch something. Take care of yourself and keep us posted!

People on TWC's GTC are asking about how things are going. I shared your news with them. I hope you don't mind.

From Herasday on TWC GTC:
Boo or Danaus, or whoever sees/chats with Daylily Dawn, tell her to look for a state administration that oversees or regulates quality of care in nursing homes, there is usually one. And tell her not to be shy about going to the supervisors/administration at the nursing home and complain about the staff, any thefts or damage done to their property, and the talking about her in her hearing when they "think" she is asleep. Those are all pretty poor attitudes and behaviors and ethics for any health care personnel to be exhibiting.

Nursing home care is too expensive to recieve shoddy care. Even if your mom and grandmom's hard earned bucks aren't paying for it all, directly, someone's hard earned tax dollars ARE and we ALL have an interest in the good use of our tax bucks, especially for decent care for the elderly....which we all will be someday, even the idiots who can't keep their idle tounges quiet around a patient/client and treat them like a thing instead of a person.

From me, I hope you get their problems resolved. Every single person deserves respect and to have their personal things left alone. I will keep your mom and grandma in my prayers.
