Re: ATL: GAMMA - Tropical Storm
Given that Gamma seems tenuously close to landfall I think we are seeking it's peak intensity right now. Unless a due north track occurs for the next few hours one would think we'd start seeing some weakening within the next 2-3 hours. It's just fascinating how 25-75 miles play's such an integral part in whether a storm weakens just enough for dry air to be entrained along with the typical weakening that occurs with landfalling hurricanes, verses RI that otherwise could have seen Gamma easily reach Cat 2 intensity and more likely neutralize any minimal entrainment of dryer air. What's even more interesting is how such a small distance in miles not only determines Gamma's location and intensity, but that outcome is likely the single greatest contributing interplay that will determine whether 92L remains a strong sheared tropical disturbance or a Cat 3 hurricane (as some intensity models predict).

Following Gamma, will be the next name in the Greek alphabet which will be Delta. Fortunately, there's a good number of remaining Greek names to exhaust before running out.

I hope recon will at least be able to sample the offshore half of the wind field.

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

And they’re heading back now that Gamma has made landfall. Darn.

The storm counts may stay the same, but Nana may be swapped in status for Gamma - it was definitely more of a hurricane than Nana was.

NHC almost never downgrades from a hurricane to a TS in post - they may have data to justify Nana as a hurricane that we don’t have access to.

It’s trying to clear out an eye on vis over land. No chance this was only a tropical storm

Of course it is. It wouldn’t be a month of 2020 without a tropical cyclone behaving weirdly. Maybe this will be enough for an upgrade at 18z.

NHC doesn’t seem to think so. Remains 70 mph at 1pm CDT.

Re: ATL: GAMMA - Tropical Storm
Reminds me a bit of Fay 2008 with the clearing of an eye over land.
I wish recon hadn't turned around but I understand why they did so. Now, it's a matter of seeing whether Gamma can maintain itself as it slowly treks NW over land and what sort of intensity/structure it has when it leaves land for the Gulf.

An updated satellite sounding just came in.
Appears that a deep cold pool is developing north of the CoC, near Cancun.
Left of the red vertical line in the bottom image.
Need to watch if it respins up off of the cold pool.
A shear gradient and a dry-line could enhance convection from the cold pool.
Stay tuned.

Boy this happened in a hurry. Imagine if this was a couple hundred miles east; Roxanne part two.

Not a meteorologist, in fact more of an idiot than anything. You should probably check with the NHC or a local NWS office for official information.

Re: ATL: GAMMA - Tropical Storm
Just catching up, wow. Does look like it’s sucking in some dry air already, I don’t see it making Hurricane strength when it gets over water again but who knows.

What a classic appearance and cold cloud tops a few hours ago though. This one was definitely not a name waster.

Gamma still looks pretty good despite being over the Yucatan all day. Might intensify once over the GOM......MGC
