Storm surge along the Missisippi Coast is now being forecast to 7--11 feet.
This is very significant if it comes to fruition.

Yeah. It's kicking up. Starting to get some gusts up around TS here in Mid-City. You can hear the howls from time to time, but it's more leaves than limbs so far. Bout to get real.
Also for the record, power blinked 3x and cable was momentarily lost. Bout to lose that all, but hopefully I'll still have phone service. Everybody be safe. This is going to affect lots of us up to the Atlantic Coast.
I’m about 500’ west of the 17th street canal. Lights solid so far. My “slack” messages from workers around New Orleans reporting outages, downed tree and first broken window. I believe real has arrived.

In terms of winds this will likely be one of the strongest hits on NOLA on record right?

Lights flickering, good squalls off of Harbor Drive on the lake in Slidell.

In terms of recorded winds and gusts I've seen Category 3 cyclones with far less impact

Re: ATL: ZETA - Hurricane - Discussion
The deep reds of the northern eyewall have reached the Westbank Expressway just across the river from the city of New Orleans. Hopefully not quite as rough as the eastern side, which will miss the most densely populated areas, but New Orleans East, Chalmette, Meraux and points south and east will get hit hard.

I don't know if it's just me, but it feels like every US hurricane landfall this year has been in the evening.

Way back it’s probably been stronger but I never looked at it. 70’s was the highest I remember but I was 1 for Betsy so maybe that might have been strongest in in my lifetime.

Or in the early pre-dawn hours like Sally did.

Re: ATL: ZETA - Hurricane - Discussion
Another report in from New Orleans...Gentilly Terrace for those of you familiar with the city.
We still have power so far, although we just got back from dropping off some food at my son's house in between gusts. They're a few blocks away, and heading back into our house we heard "thunder" which actually was probably a transformer blowing. Oddly, their power went out then but just now came back on. I don't say this often, but outstanding on Entergy's part.
Winds are periodically gusting high enough that I've been nervously watching the huge pecan tree that dominates my backyard...twenty feet tops from the back of the house.
Annndddd.....their power just went out again.
