Virac, a city of 80,000 on the southern end of Catanduanes is first in the firing line. From the map there are no large cities or big flat expanses on the eastern shore but there’s a few towns directly by the ocean that could be demolished by Goni’s northern eyewall

Amid this season which has relatively been a snoozefest compared to the Atlantic until now, I wasn't paying much attention to this storm when it first formed.

Now this thing is just insane to witness.
I hope everyone has prepared well and evacuated the most vulnerable areas given this monster headed their way. About to join Haiyan and Meranti as the strongest landfalling TC by wind speed on record.

The provinces directly south of Metro Manila are still populated by millions of people.

Yeah this is horrifying. And due to COVID it's probably hard to evacuate and move that much people out of harms way.

And so, Haiyan and Meranti’s record has fallen. Of course there’s a 170 kt landfall during a pandemic in 2020...

Looks like Goni’s eye is going right over Virac, so it could record the exact central pressure — assuming it survives.

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

Not the same version. CIMSS reworked the AMSU estimates in 2016.
