Not the same version. CIMSS reworked the AMSU estimates in 2016.
I see. Thanks (and thank you Highteeld as well.) Goni is definitely the strongest storm I’ve tracked since I started checking storm2k back in 2016

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

I am in no way a professional. Take what I say with a grain of salt as I could be totally wrong. Please refer to the NHC, NWS, or SPC for official information.

Anyways, this ERC I think was as smooth as Haiyan's, if not smoother

Think it's an interpolated estimate based on forecasts, not actual direct obs.

My weather app (the default one on the iPhone) had winds of 166 mph, which if that’s true that’s verified Cat 5 conditions.

I figured it's something like that but it's the only one I could fine. TWC website has them at 981mb right now but it could be a similar deal

Re: WPAC: GONI - Typhoon
Still no synop from Virac so we can assume communication is down there, but it is a manned station so I don’t know if data are still recorded (just that they aren’t sent).

I didn't have sudden Haiyan Pt 2 in the WPac on my 2020 scorecard but there you have it. What a beast.

Not a meteorologist, in fact more of an idiot than anything. You should probably check with the NHC or a local NWS office for official information.

I only had “Category 5” on my 2020 Part 4 bingo sheet. I was very close to putting “Cat 5 into the Philippines” on it when I made it last month.

Re: WPAC: GONI - Typhoon
With Virac now likely experiencing intense SE winds in the right front quadrant a immense storm surge must be rushing in now as we speak

Well the sun is coming up on this region. So I wonder if we'll see some footage soon.
