Recon is about 550 km or 300 miles removed from Iota's center so they'll probably reach it in a bit more than 1 hour.

Sad situation for the people of Nicaragua and Honduras to get struck by yet another MH and catastrophic rains.
They can't afford these natural disasters.

I feel the same way as you do for sure...after ETA..recovery is still in it's early stages...now Iota is on the horizon...all they can do now is head for the hills and be safe...2017 taught me that

Looks like it's taking a gulp of dry air. Here's to hoping that gets to the core to slow it down...

Oh fun, recon is experiencing delayed data again.

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

Looks like it might be facing some core issues. Having trouble closing an eye and looks like it took in some dry air but who knows.

Not an meteorologist! Just someone who is interested in weather. Please refer to the NHC and local weather officials to make decisions.

Wow talk about warming convection... It's like the opposite of yesterday lol. It does look like new towers are firing west of the center though

Yeah looks like it got some dry air into the core. Either that, or there’s a bit of an EWRC or eyewall meld going on. This structural hiccup will slow Iota down, but it still has 30-36 hours until landfall, so I don’t think it’ll make much of a difference peak-wise.

Maybe the HWRF was in to something with all those ERCs. The HMON has consistently shown Iota having a weird structure until shortly before landfall as well

Gonna go out on a limb and say I think recon finds a slightly weaker storm when it gets there. It'll strengthen again when it mixes that dry air out and regain colder convection

It has clearly strengthened since last recon left. Warming convection is very common in a maturing hurricane. The CDO May cool again after the eye pops out.

I'm wondering where people are seeing dry air? Looks to me like just a normal pulse down phase, but I'm no expert.

I'm guessing it's sputtering around 100 mph or so, but it has much more expansive banding than Hurricane Eta had. Very dangerous for far-reaching rain impacts.

Same to me. I really hope there is some dry air that can prevent an even bigger disaster for Nicaragua and Honduras, but to me it seems like the diurnal pulsing cycle.

Probably because the CDO starts to warm the exact moment at which convection suddenly falls off in the west quadrant right near the CDO (see image below). But its firing up again so probably just a hiccup...
