I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

Well, it just entered maturing stage now so the ultimate peak could be stronger when the next recon arrives.

The past few passes have consistently found the strongest winds at the NW quadrant - perhaps that's why the plane goes for NW-SE first.
The data support a low-end category 5 intensity, which is consistent with satellite presentation (T7.0 on Dvorak).

I hope they can somehow do a north-south pass.

This could make a run at Wilma's record...in NOVEMBER

But I do think it supports an upgrade to Cat 5.
I believe this is the strongest SFMR reading by a recon this season long.

I think a run at Mitch is possible. The eye is too large for a Wilma redux.

If dropsonde confirms SFMR then it's time for a special advisory

Latest Category 5 on record surpassing the November 1932 Cuba Hurricane!

First CAT 5 in the Caribbean since Hurricane Maria of 2017
First CAT 5 in the Southwestern Caribbean since Felix of 2007!
Could legitimately dip below the 1932 Cuba's 915 mb and become the most intense November hurricane on record
Extends already record streak of years featuring at least one CAT 5 to 5 years :) fitting number I'd say

It still has time though...the way the pressure has dropped we've yet to see it level off

New hot tower firing up in the SW eyewall. Intensification continues.

If Iota continues intensifying like it does right now the next recon mission (which will be the last one before landfall) will measure an even stronger storm. I think Wilma/Gilbert level intensity is unlikely (but not impossible) due to the eye, but Rita/Mitch level is definitely a possibility. This is gonna be an absolute catastrophe for CA.

The last scheduled recon arrival into Iota is at 05z tomorrow

Maybe they didn't want to/can't fly over the island?
