No, moving towards the SW

Right but hey have to head North to get back home don’t they?

Yes, they turn to the north, unless they want to get back in tho

I don't think there's ever been a 913 mb cat 4. Closest looks like Opal '95 with 916 mb. So very unlikely that this is a cat 4.

Yeah, I would have expected an exit pass to the north since they've done two passes of the center..

As I sit here in awe, that statement by Kevin is what I find mind-blowing. The very notion of "beware of November Atlantic hurricane season monsters" just defies our historical knowledge. We are truly watching a hurricane season freak show.

Recon did probably miss the area of highest winds too when it was dodging that island. 140 knots looks right based on the 143 knot SFMR.

If it's not, then 2016's Hurricane Matthew was almost certainly not a Category 5 and should be downgraded re-analysis.

It could be close to breaking the Cuba hurricane's record for the strongest November hurricane.

Now I’m wondering if we will be dealing with some forms of tropical systems into the new year...

This season has desperately tried to produce a category 5 over the last couple months and it looks like we finally got there with Iota! Can’t believe the strongest storm of the season is occurring at this point! Let’s see if the NHC pulls the trigger.

My husband asked me the same question when Iota formed!

The extrapolated pressure is dropping at a rate of 4-5 mb/hr. By the time the next recon mission arrives, it is highly likely Iota will be no higher than 910 mbar and officially shatter Cuba 1932’s record.

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

ATCF is going with 135 knots, but that came out before the (more convincing) 143 knot SFMR reading.

There is no doubt that the eye appears to have contracted further during the last couple of satellite frames.

So will we have to wait for another recon mission before it gets upgraded to CAT 5?
