Recon did probably miss the area of highest winds too when it was dodging that island. 140 knots looks right based on the 143 knot SFMR.

If it's not, then 2016's Hurricane Matthew was almost certainly not a Category 5 and should be downgraded re-analysis.

A westward moving hurricane will not have the strongest winds in the SE quadrant.

I just realized that in the weirdest way possible 2020 continues the rule that 'i' storms are one of the strongest of the season. But I don't think people would've expected it to be Iota beforehand instead of Isaias.

No, this is the first forecast point. So far, it is still a 135kt Cat 4 but it appears the NHC will forecast a 160mph point in their next advisory. Note the "OFCL" instead of "BEST", meaning it is not best track but official NHC forecast
