Didn't notice that. In that case, 135 knots. A little baffled by that decision. 2016 definitely didn't have a Category 5 then.

There's been no decision yet.

135 knot @ 12z ATCF is very much a decision. Whether-or-not they go with 140 knots at 10 am is the question. I'm inclined to think they will, but we'll see.

Obviously, semantics at the end of the day.

The NHC is the final arbiter not the automated tropical cyclone forecasting system. They use it, and someone at the NHC may have set the latest point, but it's not the same as an actual advisory.

Looks like a little hiccup in intensity between the second and third pass.

Looks like Iota is leveling off for the time being, possibly due to the suspected eyewall meld. Still likely sub-920.

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

Slightly weaker that pass. Hmmm...

Alright, now it's real. To be a fly in the room at the NHC. Probably some heated debates, but at least they're following the standard they set during Matthew in 2016.

They may have been a bit trigger-happy with Matthew since it was the first cat 5 in 9 years.

It has all day today to intensity and CDO will likely cool again once we hit nighttime. Let’s hope the upcoming recon missions will all succeed.

NHC started to question the validity of SMFR winds in high intensities in 2017 (especially Irma and Jose), and it has consistently said that reanalysis will be conducted on these storms as well as Matthew once validation on SMFR winds is completed. So one shouldn't be surprised that NHC isn't following the "standard" set in Matthew'16.

Hm, my understanding has always been the NHC has always input the initial conditions into the ATCF ahead of the official advisory. Is that not correct?

My posts are my own personal opinion, defer to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and other NOAA products for decision making during hurricane season.

I think they'll go 140 since they have revised it already. But it is kinda odd there wasn't even a single salmon barb on the strongest side of the storm that pass

Recon made the pass as if to say 'Were outta here!'

They are not wasting any time getting back to their base.

All observations are in Tecumseh, OK unless otherwise noted.

Winter posts are focused mainly for Oklahoma & Texas.

Take any of my forecasts with a grain of salt, refer to the NWS, SPC, and NHC for official information

This post was probably an opinion of mine, and in no way is official. Please refer to http://www.hurricanes.gov for official tropical analysis and advisories.

My website, with lots of tropical wx graphics, including satellite and recon: http://cyclonicwx.com

Next recon will be arriving around noon, let's see if it continues strengthening until then.

Hard to believe we get to witness something like this; it's a November for the ages. Sure are fortunate in the US that the ridiculous favorability of the WCarib didn't translate as well to the MDR during peak

Not a meteorologist, in fact more of an idiot than anything. You should probably check with the NHC or a local NWS office for official information.
