Good luck. It might be a while before you see above 32 again.

That’s kind of what it’s looking like. Today was a solid day 4 of getting everything prepared. Just got done, this calls for a bourbon. Should be smooth but very cold sailing from here.

Re: Texas Winter 2020-2021
What do you think we should do to prepare for this kind of cold?
I'm in Tyler. Use to live in Sherman. Coldest I have ever seen it in my life is low teens just a couple of times.
My home is newer, concrete slab, plex tubbing in the attic. When it freezes (low 20's) for 2 days or more the water generally freezes in my neighborhood. Never had anything bust (probably because of the plex tubes), but has anyone ever experienced colder temperatures (single digits or negative) and had the tubes last okay?
Other than covering outside pipes, extra gallons of drinking water is there anything else I should be doing??

Im near Tyler and we got down to 6 in 2018 with no issues but this event will have much more staying power and there wont be sun to warm things during the days.

GFS has a 5-10F warm bias in cold snaps

0 or 10F it'll be pretty close. Duration of freeze will be just as bad.

If I trust my thermometer outside I've been close to single digits here in Ponder. Like you new house, same type of plumbing have not had any issues. My neighbor never put pipe covers outside and never busted a pipe. We have the spigot that the water goes back inside. Our heat pump probably ran on aux heat but my house stayed warm.
Check for items left in the car, like sodas, bottles of water etc
They will freeze and expand and cause a mess.

Remember if your power goes out put your frozen stuff and fridge stuff outside. It will keep cold if the power is out longer enough.
Keep milk in a cooler outside or something to try and keep it from freezing.
Better then a power outage in summer I guess.

OKC never warmed up today. 22F and freezing drizzle/fog. Upstream cold density is very impressive.

The cold front looks to be just 10 miles west of DFW. Already freezing in the Falls. 40’s in Abilene. Hope everyone’s preparing for this cold.

Just took a frigid 20 minute walk in N Fort Worth. Was 66 degrees when I started, temp dropped to 54 degrees and hefty north wind by the time I got back home! Usually I’m more aware of the weather than that, always cool to directly experience temp drop. Still the warmest it will be all week

12 degree temperature drop in 20 minutes? If those rates keep going it will be 18 degrees in an hour. Lol

Re: Texas Winter 2020-2021
Our friend Steve McCauley
Though it is not likely we will be setting record low temperatures with our long-advertised Arctic Blast, we will, nevertheless see some of the coldest air in decades settle across parts of north Texas by the weekend. My palm tree paradise of 13 years is going to take a serious hit!
Our initial cooling is already moving in from the NW, but it is a very shallow layer of cold air and will only knock us back down into the 40s and 50s tomorrow, followed by 30s and 40s for Wednesday, and 20s and 30s for Thursday and Friday as the cold air dome thickens. The full surge of frigid air is still expected for the weekend when we should bottom out in the single digits and teens across north Texas by Sunday morning.
ALL computer models from around the world are now in agreement that winter is finally coming to stay for awhile here in north Texas and have apparently stopped their flip flopping. Most models have trended colder with only the German model increasing its predicted low temperature for Sunday morning. The American Model is the coldest with temperatures falling to near 2°F by Sunday morning, while the European Model remains more optimistic at 20°F (I wish!).
It also appears we will stay near or below freezing for AT LEAST 4 or 5 days for many - though not all - parts of north Texas.
Wintry precipitation in the form of ice and snow will likely accompany our transition to winter, so stay tuned for updates on that.
Of course, of more serious concern will be bursting water pipes, severe damage to roadways from freeze-thaw, and the possibility of power outages. So hunker down...this is going to take awhile, but it, too, shall pass!

It also has a pretty bad cold bias with snow cover. Maybe that works out as a wash? The warm low bias is more of an issue across the Southern states. There isn't sufficient data on snow cover to tell if the cold bias with snow cover changes from north to south.

How easy are they to hook up to a house, don't you need special equipment to install, etc?

It’s definitely through North Dallas. Have been outside preparing the palm trees and other things for the cold when it blew through.
This is a lot better planning on my part. Last time I had to prep the palm trees it was already in the 20’s and windy. That was terrible. Thanks to this board and the Euro finally coming into agreement, I decided to get it mostly done while it was warm. Much better!

We have a potted Sago palm that we got about 4 months ago. It's done well with freezing temps, frost and the little bit of snow we got, but this has me concerned. Never had a Sago before. I'm thinking of putting it in the garage, but I don't know if that's a good idea. Any advice?

GFS MOS (MEX) extended exclusively has 20f/15f for Saturday, 17f/9f for Sunday and again 17f/9f Monday @DFW. If that holds then we'll probably see the NWS follow that pretty soon in the next few days or something close.

I saw the predictions only today. Was at Crested Butte skiing pow pow all week last week, took some time off from looking at the weather. Wow. What a pleasant surprise. Catching up on everything now.
