How is it going to sleet in DFW with the temperatures so low? I'm used to sleet when it's right around 29-33

Well as much as I would love to stay up I'm turning in. Snow will be there in the morning, if not, well whatever.

The main event is tomorrow so I'm good.

Get that Dry Slot out of there fellas!

I haven’t checked the actual levels so treat this as an illustration.

It’s snowing 10,000 feet up.

It’s warm at 5,000 feet so it melts

Down in the bottom thousand it’s in the upper teens / lower 20’s, so it freezes again

It sleets on your head.

Image

In fact here is an example from Louisiana tomorrow. See that 0 on the bottom a d the line that goes diagonally up and to the right? ? That is freezing. The axis on the left is air pressure but you can think of height. Now See inside the yellow circle above freezing? That’s where it melts, then falls back into freezing air that is 25degrees at the ground (red line, the green is humidity )

So it melts from snow at 750 and starts to refreeze about 900

If the part that was to the right of 0 was to the left, it would be all snow.

Image

Now I hope someone actually reads this since it’s almost midnight and suddenly dead in here so folks maybe sleeping now for the big storm tomorrow.

This is a great layman guide.

The 0z FW air sounding, and initiation on the models have a small layer of above freezing (barely) somewhere between 850mb and 700mb (5k-10k ft) so it's a "graupel" part or snow/sleet mix.

I think this is the best forecast I’ve ever seen.
Tonight-low of 10. Snow 1”
Tomorrow-high of 14. Snow 3-7”
Tomorrow Night-low -1. Snow 2-4”
The rest is negative lows, below freezing highs until possibly Friday and more snow on Wednesday.

Another evening where we are below the forecasted low before midnight 22 now vs NWS forecast of 24. I be we get down into the upper teens or right at 20 as the precip moves in later tonight. The surface is not near as dry in E TX vs N TX with DPs in the upper 10s to 20s as you move SE. Temps and DPs in NW East Texas are lower than even the latest HRRR by 3 degrees and in SE East Texas temps and DPs are running a touch above the latest HRRR.

Looks like a good snowfall event for San Antonio and Austin. Some heavy bands potentially setting up although with winds gusting to 30/35mph it's also going to be very dangerous.

Freezing rain starting in College Station. The cars are covered. Not freezing to the sidewalk just yet, but the high today was 32 or 33 and it's been 30 for a couple hours now, so soon... :cold:

However when I click the point forecast it still has 2-4

None of the 0z models really showed totals that high either unless I'm missing something

Same it’s lower for Ponder compared to Denton County. Maybe they were going to go higher at some point and never edited those?

Just went to outside for a visual and it's a sleet/rain mixture for that batch moving through. Can hear the pings clear.

Edit: It's also sticking to the surfaces like glue.

This maaayyy actually be legit. Some of the 0z models actually anti-dry-slotted dfw and there’s a band going right up the middle. See the gfs and some of the wrf models. 6-10” is surprising, but the 5-7 on the gfs corroborates 4-8”

All of the above! :spam:

Somebody will get shafted with 2". No telling who, but as long as the ground is white, I won't complain.

Of course somebody is also likely to hit the jackpot with over a foot. No telling who, but it probably won't be me.
