"Skin"...

#1 Postby j » Tue Oct 21, 2003 10:15 am

I watched 10 minutes of the latest in sexually oriented new shows to debut to know I won't need to check out any of the others either.

JMO...but this is some of the worst trash to hit cable TV since MTV.

Same as The opening scene of the new show Las Vegas, I was a little shocked when I saw it, women in thongs laying next to the pool, not shocking to me but because my daughter was standing next to me when it happened to be starting. Quickly changed channels. It is going downhill, but producers put out what they are told people will watch.

I've seen "Las Vegas" only because it comes on right before "Third Watch" in TW's original time slot. It's kind of like CSI-meets-any Vegas-mob-related movie. Instead of calling the police, the casino owner figures out who the villains are and takes care of them himself. Last night, the villain was a sexual predator who slipped the date rape drug in women's drinks (and one victim was the casino owner's daughter). It's drama, but not great.

I hadn't heard of Skin until you mentioned it, J. But since I'm not a Fox channel watcher (news, yes...the regular broadcast channel, no), I'm lost when it comes to almost any Fox, WB, or UPN shows. I pretty much stick to the Big Three networks and Lifetime. Anyway, I looked up Skin to see what it was about. I found the official website and clicked into the story info. Looks like a soap opera to me. Probably like Melrose Place or Knots Landing or any of those other primetime snoozers that will never compare to the one that started it all - Dallas.

Thanks for the warning. :) I'll be sure to avoid it.

TV more and more goes for the lowest denominator...sex or violence. The question is whose to blame...TV or you and me for watching?

Television has become so bad, I rarely ever watch it anymore unless there's a ballgame on or severe weather threatens this area.

Bored to Tears, Woman Hurls TV Out Window

BERLIN (Reuters) - A 25-year-old German woman enraged over another Saturday night of boring television programs and dull re-runs hurled her TV set out the window of her fifth floor apartment window, police said Monday.

"There was nothing decent on so I just threw the thing out the window," the woman identified as Veronika K., told Bild newspaper.

No one was hurt in the incident in Potsdam. She later calmed down and watched another television with her children.

How many times are you going to tell us Ed? LOL!!!

I agree Daylily and Dennis. I decided to watch my local news this evening and all I heard was death. There were three seperate incidents last night. Two women are killed by their husbands. One daughter took her Mother hostage threatening to kill her. She ran at the police with a knife and they shot her four times in the stomach, killing her. A 15 year old boy was killed in a two vehicle accident. All of this being said within 10 minutes. Come on!!

Ugh...suicide by cop. I feel awful for the cops when they have to deal with that.

(Good) news cannot be made up.

By no means do I like hearing "bad news"- but we get information that we should know about in our area.

My most favorite show of all time? The Waltons. A very close second? Dallas! I know, I know two shows that are as different as night and day. And both created by Lorimar! I don't even have to tune into Skin to be turned off by it. I can figure out on my own, it will be too much for me to endure. To compare it to Dallas is unbelievable. Back in the day, we all thought JR was despictable - a villian you truly loved to hate. A family with so many problems, you just were so grateful for your own family! So when the Ewings became too much for me, I could say goodnight to all the Waltons. I know, corny, corny!

All of that said, I think today - 2003 - reality shows have taken over. And even shows like this Skin, want to be as shocking as the reality shows are. No thanks I say. Like so many of you, who tune into PBS for quality television, I have my own ways too. Give me a Disney movie or better yet, my 16 year old daughter's favorite books/movies of all time - Anne of Green Gables - anyday over some of the garbage that premiers on TV today. I swear when my weekly shows are up (ER/Friends/Frasier/70s Show), I think I'll just turn off the TV. When the world becomes just too much to take, Nina and I like to say - we need an Anne day (Anne of GG). A few times she's been home sick and we've watched those movies for hours. A of GG had wonderful values. Seems our TV and movie content is sorely missing that quality.

*sigh* Anne Of Green Gables!

"This is the most tragical thing that has ever happened to me!"

Which one is your favorite to watch? I prefer Megan Follows as Anne, myself.

I used to enjoy MTV until the videos became unwatchable and they showed too many other programs that I found completely boring (late 80's/early 90's). I have digital cable now, and I occassionally watch a music video channel that only shows rock/pop videos from the 70's and 80's. Much, much better than anything on MTV today.

Shawn - we only know of the Megan Follows movies. A of GG, A of A and the third one (which title escapes right now). We didn't completely care for the third movie, since the material isn't in the book! There was no Dominick in the books!!! Our favorite? Probably the first - A of GG. You didn't want to like Marilla at first but she grew on you. And Matthew......you just loved him from the start. I also love the ending of A of A - when Anne realizes she loves Gilbert and rushes to his side, possibly dying. We were crying our eyes out in that scene, but we knew all would be well.

What other movies are you referring to? Maybe we need to check them out?

The Anne phrases that come to mind are.....

"kindred spirit"

"Lake of Shining Water"

"a Jonah Day"!

Now I need to watch them again.....sigh too.

There actually have been a handful of versions made over the past century since the book was written. I've seen tidbits of the one with "Anne Shirley" as Anne Shirley. Apparently the actress took her screen name from the character. It was from the 30's, if I remember correctly. I couldn't get into that one. It was on AMC or something like that a while back. As far as I'm concerned, this is not other Anne but Megan Follows. She's like Tom Hanks is to Forrest Gump.

One of my co-workers has the trilogy on DVD. I only have the first one on VHS. The third one is simply "Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story" where she's in France during WWII.

I think I'll plan on watching the first one again over Thanksgiving weekend, when I can kick back and relax. :)

I very rearly watch TV... to be honest since moving to the USA Watching a television program can be like having teeth pulled for me. Its all the commercials... I dont think anywhere else in the world has 2 minutes of tv then 5 minutes of commercials.. I just get too frustrated.

If I normally watch something it will be on discovery, National geographic and sometimes TLC.

Im scared to let my son take the remote.. who knows what he is going to see... the new commercial for mercedes (I think) when the monster comes out of the engine gave him nightmares.. not to mention the gross commercials for new horror movies... its safer just to have the set off IMHO.
