Yeah, that is amazing! Though I can't say I am too surprised.....went from a morning high of 70°F yesterday, to a blustery cold high of 36° today!! (That's just how Iowa is, blink and the weather is different!)

A zonal flow would have the cold air to the north of the jet stream and warm air south of it.

There is usually a ridge in the west and a trough in the east or a trough in the west and a ridge in the east more often than having a zonal flow.

It looks like the huge trough out west will hang in there for a while longer. It is good to see considering how hot and drought stricken the west has been the past few months and years.
