I guess I am going to be a daredevil and say it, but I think there’s a very real possibility Ida attains Cat 5 status.

Unless explicitly stated, all info in my posts is based on my own opinions and observations. Tropical storms and hurricanes can be extremely dangerous. Do not think you can beat Mother Nature. Refer to an accredited weather research agency or meteorologist if you need to make serious decisions regarding an approaching storm.

Fast moving storms like Ida going over this part of Cuba rarely lose intensity. The mountains are too low and the island is too narrow. Charley is one of the main examples.

The radar view is showing that as the back side of the eye crosses shore, the front side of the eye is already entering the Gulf. The center is only briefly cut off from it rocket fuel water source.

Just saw the explosion of convection *over land* at sunset. I'm in shock.

In my amateurish opinion I agree with you. Barring some miracle there seems to be nothing standing in Ida's way.

Do not take anything I say seriously as a form of meteorological prediction. I am not a meteorologist; I don't think being in law school translates to any special knowledge. I am just a somewhat bullish amateur watcher.

For those that missed it, Mark Sudduth (hurricanetrack) is headed into Ms, La to set up cams for Ida. He has now partnered with s2k and you can watch his live cam here

There is also a hurricanetrack forum on the board index page for other info from him as well.

The last set from the AF plane was at 8:29 PM and since that time no new ones have been out. Hoping all is fine and is only communication issues.

Edit. Guess what they released #13 now. :D

Something to think about with the Katrina references...
Katrina in the SE GOM underwent an eyewall replacement cycle before it was able to bump up to Cat 5. I would think that to attain that kind of intensity this would have to do the same
Here is the saved loop of Katrina. Note the eye after it comes off FL

I am by no means a professional. DO NOT look at my forecasts for official information or make decisions based on what I post.

When I wake up (~6 EDT), I think this will be at least Category III hurricane. Not only does the Gulf of Mexico have very warm SSTs and high amounts of UOHC throughout, but the loop current will provide even more fuel for Hurricane Ida.

I think it's actually just degrading again and lost the northern/northwest features. Just my opinion though.

It seems like every time I open facebook, Jeff Linder is announcing another evacuation order. I hope enough people in authority are still around and learned some lessons from Katrina. God help them.

The only time worst would be as it is making landfall as a cat4 or 5.
