Re: Most infamous storm to bear each letter
I came up with these on the spot so I probably missed a few (especially from longer ago), but this is what I have at the moment. I decided only to go with 1 storm per letter, so no honorable mentions. But leaving out hurricanes such as Andrew, Betsy, Dorian, Hattie, Hazel, Ike, Ivan, Jeanne, Maria, Matthew, Michael, Stan etc. the list goes on and on. I didn't count the Greek names, but if I did you'd of course have Zeta and in terms of impact I'd but Eta above Emily.

Let's see:
A: Andrew (1992)
B: Betsy (1965)
C: Camille (1969)
D: David (1979) (Very close call with this one and Dorian)
E: Elena (1985) (E doesn't have a strong track record)
F: Flora (1963) (Unlike E, F has a infamous record. Very difficult one as there were a lot of bad F storms)
G: Gilbert (1988)
H: Harvey (2017)
I: Irma (2017) (Very difficult as well. It was between this and Ivan)
J: Janet (1955)
K: Katrina (2005)
L: Laura (2020)
M: Maria (2017) (M is another infamous one. Mitch also deserve top mention too)
N: Noel (2007) (Compared to M, N is surprisingly tame)
O: Opal (1995)
P: Paloma (2008)
R: Rita (2005)
S: Sandy (2012)
T: Tomas (2010)
V: Vince (2005)

Re: Most infamous storm to bear each letter
Mitch killed over 10,000 people and significantly set back progress in more than one Central American country for years. The only M name that should even compare is Maria, which had a similar effect on Dominica and Puerto Rico, but overall still killed far fewer people.

If EPAC was counted I’d probably say Patricia for P, maybe even Paul of ‘82.

Another infamous “I”-name is about to be added to the compendium. The timing of this thread is, well, impeccable, but not in a good way.

After 2024, it looks like B will go for Beryl, and there's going to be some competition between Harvey and Helene for H, as well as Mitch/Maria and Milton for M

Re: Most infamous storm to bear each letter
Back in 2016-2018, the "M monster" trend started to emerge after Matthew, Maria and Michael, to the point where people were "watching out" for Melissa (2019). Thankfully, that trend didn't continue in later years, although there were a few close calls with L storms that did or did not hit land (Lorenzo, Laura, Larry, Lee).
Looks like 2024 wanted to reconvene the M monster trend.

Also, kevin's list fits here:
kevin wrote:No clue where to put this so I'll put it here. Thought this was a fun little list, the most intense Atlantic hurricane for each letter of the alphabet (so only hurricanes since we've started using official names instead of numbers so no storms like "Labor Day"). The picks are chosen by pressure, but if there is another storm with a higher pressure, but also stronger winds it's added in italics behind it.

I’d probably still give Mitch and Maria the edge over Milton at the moment. Harvey vs. Helene is TBA.
One other change since doing the list in 2021 is that I’d probably replace Irma with Ian.

Hugo is not mentioned enough for the H in name. It was horrible for Guadalupe, St. Croix and Puerto Rico before hitting South Carolina. It also almost took out one of NOAA's WP-3s..
