Mississippi shelters on standby, opening Saturday
Mississippi Emergency Management Agency officials have announced at least five shelters in Harrison and Pearl River counties will open late Saturday afternoon. Sixteen other shelters in southern counties are on standby.
Masks are required to be worn at all shelters and extra ones will be provided to anyone who does not have one, according to the website.
The Mississippi State Department of Health announced the Mississippi State Medical Needs Shelter, 1640 Coy Ave., in Wiggins, Stone County, will open at noon Saturday. The shelter is a last resort for people whose medical needs cannot be accommodated in a general population shelter.
Shelter admission is based on several criteria, including people with health or medical conditions requiring professional care; those with chronic conditions requiring assistance with daily living activities or skilled nursing care; those in need of supervised medication dispensing and vital signs readings; those with physical, mental or cognitive disabilities who can't shelter with the general population; and those with other disabilities who cannot shelter with the general population.
Only one caregiver can accompany a resident inside. Service animals will be allowed in the shelter.
Because of COVID-19, the shelter will have a limited capacity with socially distanced cots.

I am in Cut Off La. which is in Southern Lafourche parish and I am expecting to see the eye pass over me here. I will post updates about conditions here in my area.
At 8:21 am the wind is pretty steady about 30-35 mph with some gusts I would guess are about 50mph. Only had a bit of rain so far but conditions have worsened since I hit the floor around 5:30 am.
