Are there any projects/plans or testing/prototypes of a unnamed aerial drone(ie like ones used for military) for hurricane reconnaissance?
Or does the nature of hurricanes/tropical systems that require onboard human controlled flights?
Man, the US needs newer planes and/or more updated/better maintenance for the fleet of Hurricane Hunters....better funding....
rant over

Back to Ida, hopefully this will be less than forecast but still time for for Ida to get bigger/stronger/more dangerous at landfall...Prayers....

Around five years or so ago, NASA had a Global Hawk that was used for hurricane-related data collection:

https://www.nasa.gov/centers/armstrong/aircraft/GlobalHawk/index.html

It definitely isn't the kind of aircraft you'd want to fly into a storm, by any means, but it has a good high-altitude capability and a long loiter time, both of which could be good for collecting environmental data around a storm. I don't know its current status, though.

What you are seeing is a hot tower race around the eye. Pretty cool to see.

Very rapid increase in organization. Ida is starting to look like a buzzsaw.

My posts are my own personal opinion, defer to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and other NOAA products for decision making during hurricane season.

Told you Thu Night it was Grand Isle. Hope you are safe Steve.

Yeah. I had it narrowed to down there as well. There’s really not much else that far south until the next highway over (Port Sulphur and Venice) since it’s all pretty much open water. For those who have never been down there, Louisiana Hwy 1 (and the new elevated highway) takes you down to Port Fourchon and Grand Isle. Grand isle is to the east and Fourchon is to the west at the coast. I don’t think there are 15 miles between them.

Interesting.... thanks Craters. I doubt it's in use which is a shame. I'd think we'd hear an occasional reference to data collected with NHC discussions. I guess the military found better uses.

I've been watching Ida's every move on satellite today and frequently refreshing it.

I have the center right now (on satellite) at 27.3N 88.2W.

Let me ask you this. The NHC in their last discussion mentioned something about a double wind maximum. Isn't that usually indicative of an eyewall replacement cycle?

Yes. It’s possible, but need recon to confirm or a fresh microwave pass.

Stormgoddes, I know someone answered you earlier about the reasonable time for tropical-storm-force winds and how they would reach your area around 8 am Sunday. However, keep in mind that the earlier bands will pack some pretty strong winds. For example about 30 minutes ago(10:00 pm central time ) a little storm in one of the far outer bands just moved through my area (Cut Off La.). We got about 20 minutes of hard rain and winds gusting to around 30 or so. This is well removed from the center since Ida is still well offshore. I expect some of these bands to start impacting your area sometime during the night tonight. From the IR sat view it looks like the closest band is over around South Alabama so it will take a while to rotate around and impact the BR to Hammond area,

That radar image gives a pretty definitive answer to the question of an ERC. No outer eyewall apparent at this point in time.

I think there is a very good chance that this will be going west of Grand Isle, she is already almost due South of Port Sulphur and doing its wobbles back and forth.

Current NHC Track zoomed in to show areas that will be impacted. If I'm in New Orleans I'm biting my nails.

Not even close to being south of Port Sulphur. Radar has her due south of the AL MS state line.
