Eye didn't look as dry on this drop.
Maybe no pending EWRC after all.
Need to watch further drops to see if there is a trend.

936mb from this pass means Ida has deepened by 10 mb in just 59 minutes. That is insane from a system with such a large eye. A 920s storm is very possible now.

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

Woke up to the dog barking at the wind this morning. Still haven't quite gotten fully awake and I check in here. Wow, went to bed right after the recon returned to Ida and she had a pressure of around 955mb and winds were up quite a bit from earlier. I am in awe of Ida's power as I wake up. Gonna be a bad scene here today and tonight.

The eye literally cleared out within the span of the past fifty minutes on IR. That is one of the fastest such clearings I have personally observed.

Yeah I've been watching nearing on 20 years now but that was amazing to see. This thing is almost certainly pulling a Michael at the moment and undergoing RI into landfall. A 5 really is on the cards now.

I'd like to see another piece of data support that 936, but it does seem to be making a run towards high end 4 or 5.

I’m not from there but reading the New Orleans subreddit…there were a lot that were staying.

are you in Cutoff now? If so I hope you are on high ground in a VERY sturdy structure!

Time to call it a night. I have the benefit of being able to see all of these tropical systems from afar and without any personal impact. This time around, I do have a friend that lives in New Orleans that did not evacuate. Still, I myself am far removed from any effects, so I have the benefit of watching this unfold from a purely meteorological perspective. Tonight has been absolutely insane and this will surely be the first place I check when I wake up. 17 years of tracking hurricanes and I still get addicted to staying up on this forum late when a hurricane bombs out.

Everybody please be safe. This has the makings of a nightmare scenario and unfortunately it sounds like a lot of people did not or could not evacuate.

I am by no means a professional. DO NOT look at my forecasts for official information or make decisions based on what I post.

Goal: to become a registered expert over tropical and subtropical cyclones.

Hard to imagine merely a month ago there was talk of this season underperforming and being a dud with an active EPAC and shear/dry air when now we are faced with a near-Cat 5 bearing down on New Orleans. From now on, 2021 once again joins the list of recent seasons to feature at least one nasty August major and a sudden switch flip.

Unless explicitly stated, all info in my posts is based on my own opinions and observations. Tropical storms and hurricanes can be extremely dangerous. Do not think you can beat Mother Nature. Refer to an accredited weather research agency or meteorologist if you need to make serious decisions regarding an approaching storm.

We see those posts every season during the usual slowdown in mid to late July which of course is complete nonsense because the season is just starting.
