At this point, I don't think it is "will they?", its more like "when will they?", to do the upgrade to Cat 5, there is plenty of evidence in RECON, to me anyway that it already is, but I can understand them being hesitant. The post season review will be interesting on this one.

I just woke up and saw this, I cannot believe what I'm seeing. I knew someday there would be a storm worse than Katrina, but the fact that it came so soon...
The monetary and human costs of Ida will be staggering. I hope for the best for New Orleans, but it does look incredibly bleak right now.

Is Ida entering somewhat higher shear? Latest IR and Dvorak frames show a warmer SE quadrant and a sharper demarcation between light/heavy in the NW.

Is it starting to encounter southwesterly flow on the flank of its ULAC as it begins to encounter the westernmost axis of ML ridging and enter westerlies?

They won't upgrade unless FL winds reach around 150-155kts and SFMR reaches around 150kts IMO. Especially during their ongoing SFMR research and after Iota's downgrade.

I was seriously hoping I wouldn't wake up to this... This is going to be terrible.

I've read some comparisons to Camille and Michael with this storm. Just looking at Pressure, we're still well above the second lowest with Camille at 900 mb and Michael's 919 mb. Not taking anything away from extremely dangerous Ida at 150 mph which will likely be Louisiana's strongest hurricane...just looking at a pressure perspective. Btw Katrina's lowest pressure was 928 mb.

Katrina’s lowest pressure was 903 or 902

At landfall, and I reported the second landfall pressure. It was 920 mb at first landfall. My apologies.

when storm chasers are leaving an area due to fear of safety for their crew, you know it’s unsurviveable in that area. hopefully these people staying see this tweet and leave.

A lot of people didn't evacuate grande isle, NWS and NHC were trying to convince as many people as possible that to not compare this to previous storms.

I was disappointed when Laura didn’t make it to a cat five, but I will be absolutely astonished if ida doesn’t make it to a cat five

Doesn’t matter much if thr NHC says it hits at 155 mph or 157mph, damage is basically the same and like we saw with Michael, they will review all the data after the storm and will make a final decision on cat 5….prayers to everyone going to suffer life changing conditions
