This has a similar structure to Dorian approaching its first landfall in the Bahamas. Someone mentioned this reminding them of Dorian yesterday and Ida certainly looks it on IR. This is going to be a bad day for the people in its path...

What's even more interesting about Ida is the amount of jaw-dropping footage of its landfall that will be generated by storm chasers due to its daytime landfall.

Unless explicitly stated, all info in my posts is based on my own opinions and observations. Tropical storms and hurricanes can be extremely dangerous. Do not think you can beat Mother Nature. Refer to an accredited weather research agency or meteorologist if you need to make serious decisions regarding an approaching storm.

This is mind blowing, I went to sleep at midnight and just work up to an almost Cat5 storm…I did not see that coming. I pray those people in the path heeded the evacuation.

If Ida moves over Grand Isle and up through Barrataria Bay, there isn’t really any land to speak of to stop it from strengthening or maintaining strength until it gets past Lake Salvador, that whole region is shallow marshland and not solid ground.

What are the effects on New Orleans going to be?

I fear that oil platform that was entering the western eyewall is down for the count now... the site at the delta (Southwest Pass) currently reporting 105G121... outside of the eyewall

Praying you and your family will stay safe MGC. I can only imagine what it's like to be facing this 16 years after Katrina.

These types of radar videos are the most fascinating to me. To actually SEE the mesovortices inside the eye wall proves exactly where all the devastation comes from.

Will there be another recon flight to sample Ida in its last few hours before landfall? I anticipate the current flights leaving soon; they’ve done so many eyewall passes over the last several hours.

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

Judging by the current trajectory, western New Orleans is going in for a big beating.

If the current flight were to sample the northeastern quadrant, I would bet that it would find Cat-5 winds at the surface.

My posts are my own personal opinion, defer to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and other NOAA products for decision making during hurricane season.
