As horrifying as this is, imagine if the track was about 35 miles farther east.

im not calling all clear yet but it appears NOLA got lucky again.

This is true. I remember it like it was yesterday. There was a brief sigh of relief, that the city had been spared, and then later the levees failed. It was a slow-motion disaster. This event is just starting so let's hold-off before declaring NOLA got lucky again.

Flabbergasted. Grand Isle is just a bunch of houses on stilts.

Most stilts are 8 to 10 feet.

Yeah, that's what flabbergasts me. That anyone would have stayed in Grand Isle of all places with unstable buildings and all this advance warning of a very strong storm.

I just had that very convo with a friend. She gave me a list of reasons....don't have a car they can get out with.....don't have the money to stay away somewhere.....not believing their own, secure homes won't make it....

idk what to make of it, personally. Such a waste of life to ignore something known and all the warnings....my heart hurts to think what they are going through right now....

This is partially a misconception that took hold, I think because of media reports in the aftermath of the storm that didn't cover parts of the city east of the Industrial Canal. Many parts of eastern New Orleans, including the Ninth Ward and downriver into St. Bernard Parish, flooded during the storm. This is no doubt when many, if not the majority, of the fatalities occurred.

I just don't want to read any more about Grand Isle any more. It's just going to be so horrible.

We went up to Mexico Beach after Michael with supplies. The scene was surreal. To see an almost entirely BARE beach....and knowing that homes used to sit there.....and poeple were in some of them attempting to "ride it out."

You can't even really....say.....anything once you've seen it irl.....

Especially if you've been there before the storm. They're slowly but surely rebounding, have been there a couple times since. Was shocking the first time back (was there as recently as July 2018)

Is it what logical people would do .... no
But it is easy to sit afar and judge, but we honestly do not know what is happening within their lives that made them choose to stay.
Not defending the decision, but not going to pass judgment either.

I will pass some judgement, because apparently some are being asked to be rescued now which puts emergency personnel in danger. I pass judgment not because of their risk to self, but the risk their decision inflicts upon others to get them out.

Maybe it's just the tense moments right before landfall but it always feels like these hurricanes slow down as they are making landfall. Ida seems to have slowed down a bit.

I was just mentioning this to someone this morning. Those people who stayed on Grand Isle should have been warned to do that.

Levee overtopping is NOT a levee failure. Levee failure is when the structure itself fails. Overtopping simply means the surge got higher than the levee itself.
