This is partially a misconception that took hold, I think because of media reports in the aftermath of the storm that didn't cover parts of the city east of the Industrial Canal. Many parts of eastern New Orleans, including the Ninth Ward and downriver into St. Bernard Parish, flooded during the storm. This is no doubt when many, if not the majority, of the fatalities occurred.

Easy, the levees failed during and after Katrina's passage. The only people that deserve scorn are the USACE and national media outlets. What part of NOLA were you from? I was one of the north shore folks.
I lived in river ridge, and employed many people in the 9nth ward.

Ive marked the area effected by this Levee failure for anyone who wants to know where it is

Levee overtopping is NOT a levee failure. Levee failure is when the structure itself fails. Overtopping simply means the surge got higher than the levee itself.
Its not really relevant...if the water is overtopping it doesnt stop until it reach equilibrium on the otherside
This is a very rural area anyway and most people evacuated

THIS IS NOT KATRINA and we will not be rehashing what happened in 2005. Please stay on topic.

wise not to, the levees failed several hours after the danger was thought to be over with Katrina.
This is true. I remember it like it was yesterday. There was a brief sigh of relief, that the city had been spared, and then later the levees failed. It was a slow-motion disaster. This event is just starting so let's hold-off before declaring NOLA got lucky again.
I think posts declaring dodged bullets, silver linings, and all clears should be immediately deleted.

idk what to make of it, personally. Such a waste of life to ignore something known and all the warnings....my heart hurts to think what they are going through right now....
This is what gets me. I can understand when people are disabled. That's one thing. But the money and car thing I don't get. And believe me - I've been there. I scrimped, pawned, slept on couches and hitched rides my way through college and after for a long time.
Here's the analogy I always use. If a sheriff came knocking on your door and told you that you needed to leave immediately because they knew with 100% certainly that a nuclear blast was going to detonate directly overhead at noon the next day, you bet 100% those same people would 'find a way' to hitch a ride outta dodge. Fast.
Because that's the equivalent to what's about to happen on Grand Isle. But for whatever reason people are either in denial or they simply don't understand the power of a major hurricane.
Alright folks - we should save this debate for after the storm. Sadly, it's too late to get them out now. I hope they wrote their SSN's on their arms. And I hope those who are in harm's way in the future can learn something from this.

The only think we can do is hope those upgrades to the levees actually make a difference.

There was a YouTube video posted yesterday here of the surge coming into St. Bernard Parish and people on their roofs during the storm. My wife's uncle and cousins literally survived by climbing into a fishing boat while the storm was ongoing. The levees along the Industrial Canal and Mississippi River Gulf Outlet failed and/or were overtopped while the storm was in progress.

What are the new levees made of. If dirt, and they overtop without a working spillway to divert the erosive effects of the water, then they will most likely experience damage. I don't want to say fail, but it's not a good thing to have happen. Hopefully they aren't dirt.

Going to be a very close call if Grand Isle will avoid the inner eyewall. Either way it is going to be really bad for them.

Grand Isle under water with people trapped on roof. Businesses already destroyed by surge. US1 from Port Lourchon to Grand Isle under water.

Yes true, forgot to mention that, with 'surface winds' I meant Est. Sfc. Wind.
