Looks like the eyewall has reached the coast.

Some are still earthen, but the storm gates and walls were expanded.
This will be a good test.
I am praying for a complete success

That Grand Isle camera is intense. Surge plus waves and wind pounding those houses. I pray for a miracle for those that stayed.

Levee overtopping is NOT a levee failure. Levee failure is when the structure itself fails. Overtopping simply means the surge got higher than the levee itself.

Its not really relevant...if the water is overtopping it doesnt stop until it reach equilibrium on the otherside

This is a very rural area anyway and most people evacuated

It’s an important distinction for lots of reasons.

That was very predictable for Grand Isle, hopefully, those people survive but its not a sure bet, its all about the surge, always has been in hurricanes.

Here is some imagines of the upgrades.

They sunk steel ballasts into the levee's facing lake Ponchatrain...they did about 25 miles of this and fixed the Industrial canal that broke.

To my knowledge that was the only upgrade so far. The pumps are planned to be upgraded in the next few years

you can see these upgrades on google streetview / google maps

The NHC is the best cyclone forecasting agency in the world, we should all be eternally grateful.

Grand Isle about to go in that moat of sorts, going to be a close call with the eastern inner eyewall

Not a meteorologist, in fact more of an idiot than anything. You should probably check with the NHC or a local NWS office for official information.

Looks like the western end, at least, will get it.

Just checked - wow. People posting videos way south of New Orleans. Crazy.

Mix of air-and-water-borne debris flying past that Grand Isle cam on TWC.

Grand Isle Police Chief on with TWC now...said this is the worst storm he has ever seen. 15 residents who made their way over to the PD are hunkered down with them in their building.

Just a meager request. Can we stop the post game comments until after the game is over? I really don't care if New Orleans is spared or not. People are going to be affected and people outside of Sin City are important too.

This post is NOT an official forecast and should not be used as such. It is just my opinion and may or may not be backed by sound meteorological products.
