It's just so sad because it didn't have to be this way...a place like a nursing home should have been evacuated based on what happened after Katrina.
It doesn't say that the nursing home had residents in it. Those barges (22 of them) are lose in St Bernard's Parish on the Mississippi river are the big worry, they can go crashing into the levees and cause severe damage that can lead to catastrophic flooding. The catastrophic power failure is another big hit that will last for days if not weeks.
Shoot there's barges loose now? Yeah that's gonna be a major problem if they hit the levees. Or bridges. Or anything
Its shaping up to be a disaster of epic proportions...and I don't think that's hyperbole. Feels like the entire southern half of the state is either being ripped apart, or flooded.

Beef Stew wrote:I think in the coming days we’re going to see photos of even more widespread catastrophic wind damage from Ida; something to the degree of which is unrivaled by anything (in the ConUS) in many seasons bar Michael. Ida’s unexpected duration as a major will just have exacerbated this.
Was gonna ask about this in terms of CONUS landfalls(regardless if you wanna say well it was over swamp land) whats the longest duration after official LF of a Major. this is going on 10 hours now, and tech 8.5 if you wanted to count it after it's second landfall

Ida is going to crack the top 10 for costliest Atlantic hurricanes for sure.

Yes, 22 of them. And there was at least one bridge strike in Jefferson Parish already.
Proof on the Bridge Strike?
I heard it from a Jefferson Parish official on the TWC and also read it somewhere else.

My prediction is that it will be #6 behind Sandy but I can easily see it getting up to #3.

I heard it from a Jefferson Parish official on the TWC and also read it somewhere else.
The Kerner Swing Bridge in Lafitte was hit by a barge, Jefferson Parish officials said just before 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
"Any residents that may still be in Lafitte are advised to not attempt to drive on this bridge," the parish said in a news release. "We do not believe it is structurally safe."
No other details were immediately available.
Earlier in the evening, St. Bernard Parish reported 22 barges had broken loose near Chalmette. There was no immediate indication whether the two incidents were related.

At this point as someone in Houston, all I can think is "There but for the grace of God, go I."

One of the local news guys was talking about this effecting the pumps to drain New Orleans, not sure if it does or not, cant believe they would only depend on electrical grid. But no telling

Just like Jon Snow..."I know nothing" except what I know, and most of what I know is gathered by the fine people of the NHC
