I've been looking for confirmation as well but based on the scanner feed and rate they are saying water is rising it seems to be faster than an overtop would be.

One failure confirmed. Kraemer, LA to the west of New Orleans, a levee holding back waters of Lac De Allmands did fail per local gov't Facebook live. Laplace, LA is also flooding but unclear if related to same levee failure as Kraemer.

Yikes hopefully no more of them fail...

Something bad happened here. Maybe a levee broke along the swamp or something

I plotted like 50 addresses on the map, the entire city is underwater if true

From what I gathered from local news, it seems it’s a combination of freshwater flooding from the rain and surge from Lake Ponchartrain

Yeah whatever it was it aint good. Thats a city of 30,000 people that is for sure gonna need some major rebuilding. Also the Chevron oil storage is there, hoping the tanks are not leaking.

Seeing a ton of reports that a good amount of Laplace is underwater at this point. Conflicting reports of the cause. Flash flood emergency remains in effect.

Very sadly, I'm not surprised by this news. I remember watching Fox New Orleans reporters last night on my Smart TV interview several people outside the levee system who chose to stay in their homes. When asked one man admitted his home was built post-1965 (in the 1970s) so it wasn't there for Betsy. Remembering my own experience with Andrew in South Florida I literally screamed "stupid fool" at the TV (my family did not appreciate that).

I'm glad I could spend time on the board today. It always seems to quiet down here DRAMATICALLY after landfall once all the model and intensity debates are over. Yet it's the human impact stories that have always fascinated me about storms, what people endure and survive. (Hopefully not in any macabre sense, more just the awe of seeing the power of tropical storms...). I find it helpful to try and document what's happening in real time, including capturing some of the confusion and trying to get information out of hard hit areas. Hopefully maybe in the future, someone will browse through the archive of this discussion and be able to get a bit of a feel for what it was like trying to understand what was happening in real time.

Obviously an elevated measurement but I believe this might be one of the highest surface readings ever recorded in CONUS. Sustained wind of 130kt and gust to 150kt is almost unheard of. Any details on the elevation of the instrument?

There are ZERO levees to protect LaPlace. It is the next major levee project underway by the USCOE. LaPlace is now the catchall for tidal surge, due to the levee protection the USCOE built out to protect New Orleans, The Eastbank of Jefferson Parish and the Eastbank of St. Charles Parish. I would need to go into great depth to explain the actual physical nature of what I tried to say, but you have the gist of the issue at this time.

Yeah definitely an awful situation all the way around there

Ah, yes, the Twitter engineering experts.

I'm struck by this thought - we're seeing lots of social media posts requesting help/rescue. That wouldn't have been possible without the cellular network, which seems to be operating well above many folks' expectations. Yes, I understand that it's completely down in some areas due to failure of the supporting structures or inundation. But still. It wasn't all that many years ago when nobody would have any way to "call for help."

Well, if the transmission towers fell into the Mississippi River, it certainly won't be a quick repair. But I think two months is an exaggeration.
