The first forecast for this system by the BoM shows it reaching Category 1 before making landfall south of Darwin. But the uncertainty is very high already by day 2, as illustrated by the almost 800 km wide grey area of potential tracks.

Note that the Bureau of Meteorology in Australia (BoM) uses a different hurricane scale. The 1-5 scale is not equal to Saffir-Simpson. A Cat 1 there is a tropical storm. BoM also requires TS winds more than half way around the center (3 quadrants) to be classified as a TS.

TROPICAL CYCLONE INFORMATION BULLETIN
Issued at 2:02 pm EST on Friday 31 December 2021

At 1 pm AEST Friday, Tropical Cyclone Seth (Category 1) with central pressure
992 hPa was located
near latitude 19.7 south longitude 153.7 east, which is about 495 km east
northeast of Mackay and 490 km northeast of Yeppoon.

The cyclone is moving southeast at 27 kilometres per hour.
The tropical cyclone is not expected to directly affect the coastline in the
next 48h however it will be directing large waves towards the coast over the
weekend and early next week.

The next Information Bulletin will be issued by 5 pm AEST today.

I find it interesting that New Years Eve seems to be a common day for a tropical cyclone to form in the last decade or so.
