Thanksgiving Snowstorm

#1 Postby wxid » Tue Nov 11, 2003 1:15 pm

This is a trivia question for those with good memories (or records). Perhaps King , with your good memory or Weather53 (any folks that were in MidAtlantic area). My memory is swiss cheese form then , but on Thanksgiving DAY in 1988 or 1989 (?) there was a decent snowstorm i think of about 6 inches here in Salisbury, MD and i am guessing about 6-10" in DCA (?). Anyone recall this? I can find no records of it, but i am pretty sure it was one of those years . Another close year had an Ice storm, but this was definately SNOW, as i recall riding around prior to the BIG dinner doing donuts with my cousin.

It was Thanksgiving 1989!

The day before Thanksgiving , on Nov 22nd 1989.... snowsqualls accompanied by thunder and lightning fell at Milwaukee WI where 9in of snow fell. 11in fell at Waukegan and 2.1in at Chicago;s O'Hare.
That same day... Baltimore saw 2.0in snow, Dulles 2.2in, and even Central park NY had 0.3inches.

THANKSGIVING DAY Nov 23 1989

Central Park ws a Winter Wonderland after the 1st White Thanksgiving in 51 years! Temps were wlll below freezing all day, and snow fell on the Annula Thanksgiving Day Parade. The temp was near 23F at parade time..some of the floats had to be grounded due to high winds. New York City was 4.7in, Newark NJ 5.3in, Bridgeprt CT 6.2in Providence RI 8.0in.

That was the Great Thanksgiving Day 1989 snowstorm.

Perhaps it was only 3-5 inches (you know how memory makes that totals increase...hehe) , but it was definately enough to do donuts in, and i don't think it changed to rain ....they always do in this part of Maryland with a Noreaster. I don't know,, but it didnt resemble a NE, so i am guessing it was a Clipper or something? Good enough though!

My area (northern suburbs of Philadelphia) picked up 4 inches of snow the night before Thanksgiving in 1989. It was nice to wake up to a blanket of white on Thanksgiving Day! 8-) This came during an extremely cold period from mid-November through the end of December in 1989. In fact, it was likely the coldest Novembers/Decembers in my entire life.

Cool! It was the first 'White Thanksgiving' I've had and probably the only. I think one year between '88-'91, there was an Ice storm (I'm in Eastern Shore Maryland)...that was like a 'Crystal Thanksgiving' !

thanksgiving snowstorms

#8 Postby mrfreeze » Tue Nov 11, 2003 9:43 pm

i've only experienced three notable thanksgiving snows in my lifetime that i can recall. the first was in camdenton,mo about a foot in 1975. the second was the only other one i've experienced in missouri . it was thanksgiving eve 1980. we got about 7'' of snow. the last one was thanksgiving eve 1987 n colorado springs when we recieved about 4.5''.

i think were way overdue here in st.louis way, way overdue. i got a hunch it just might happen this year. of course i have no scientific information to base it on.

Pretty much correct wxid...................Problem here is when it does snow it all comes at once in a single season or storm then its back to being jipped............I thankfully was fortunate enough to be at the Delaware coast in 95-96 when the most snow had ever fallen in a winter season which as well beat out the records in DC,Balt and Philly.................That in itself kinda made up for the jipped years!!!!!!!

Yep, right in the middle..... 71.3"

I remember the year well, I was in 8th grade, and we were in school through the second week of June due to all the snow days!

I wanna smash that record!
